Answer

Discussion on Employment Insurance (EI) To Seasonal Agricultural Workers

A wide-ranging debate has ensued in Canada about whether seasonal agricultural workers should be allowed access to employment insurance (EI) benefits. Some of the arguments for the extension of EI to seasonal agricultural workers is because the toxic intersection of poverty and lack of fundamental rights places the seasonal workers a greater risk of illnesses, injuries, and even death. Notably, evidence has demonstrated that the seasonal migrant workers are less likely to have safety equipment in the farms and report the existence of hazards and accidents in the workplace. As such, EI is vital to ensure that they are covered against injuries and the effects of unsafe work practices. I think that these workers should be eligible for EI because, just like other workers, they need to be sure that they will be covered in case of work-related injuries or loss of employment.
