Parental Involvement in Child’s Coursework
It is important for parents to involve themselves in their children’s education. However, some parents do not involve themselves in their children’s education. Some of the reasons that may hinder parental involvement in child’s education include illiteracy and inability to speak instructional language such as English. Another issue is the failure of the parents in school (Munje & Mncube, 2018). Teachers can gain insight into parent’s perception about their participation in school by assessing parent’s attendance in family-school events, parent’s level of education, the parent’s work schedule and/or occupation, and on whether the parent provides his/her child with all the essential materials and instruments necessary for learning. Besides, teachers should assess on whether parents are concerned about their child performance or progress, or not. Concerned parents are more likely to be involved in their child’s education (Lara & Saracostti, 2019).
Parent’s decision to helping child complete homework may be done so without teacher’s knowledge. Other forms of parental involvement in child’s education that may not be detected by teacher’s include attending functions with their children, discussing school events at home, and helping children read and learn the language of instruction at home. Teachers may utilize various opportunities to improve collaboration between the teachers with families/parents. Teacher should ensure that they have developed mutual trust relationships with parent and frequent contact or communication. Home-school communication is a strong predictor for creation of trust-based relationships between parents and teachers. Besides, parents should create a sense of equality between themselves and the parents to promote parental involvement in their child’s education. Family-school events also provide an opportunity for promoting parental involvement in child’s education (Mahuro & Hungi, 2016).
