Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) gives provisions that assess and determine if children require special education services. Determining whether a child requires special education services is often confusing, and teachers and parents need to seek the interpretation of IDEA. As a special education, the law provides protection to children with disabilities and their parents. Based on the observation from interviews with childhood educators, several aspects about IDEA, including purposes such as the provision of free public education to children with disabilities as well as provides guardians and parents with a voice in the education of their children. additionally, procedural safeguards of IDEA give parents specific rights and protection, including consenting to services provided to children (Lee, 2014).
The provisions of IDEA cover children from birth through high school graduation with 21 years of age. The interviews with educators reveal that the program provides early services for intervention up to the age of 3, and special education for older children in public schools. Another aspect revealed in the interview entails the services of IDEA and eligibility. The program is not open for all children but encompasses children falling in disability categories such as autism, deafness, emotional disturbance, intellectual disability, and speech and language impairment (Lee, 2014). The assistance I offered in the classroom included helping the educators to move the children from one activity to another, engage the children in special education practices as well as in speech development and play. Some of the standard professional practices identified included assessing parent/guardian consent and establishing advocacy for the children. These standards are critical in future practice as they follow the requirements of IDEA in protecting children with disabilities.
