   Papers will be completed as a Word document only. The papers will be completed using APA formatting. The papers will be at least 800 words in length. Students are encouraged to critically examine and question a topic area in detail using their book. Students must use four references from the text only. Internet sources will not be used.    Referencing – types of quotes:
   Direct – As stated by the Jacobson, “student discourse is an important part of the learning process and the culture of the classroom” (Jacobson pg. 583).
   Indirect – Jacobson (1998 pg. 583) notes that teachers should encourage student centered discourse to facilitate a learning community in their classroom.

   Example 1 – Good

   While watching the video I couldn’t help but notice that Dennis Rader was an intelligent and seemingly socialized member of the community. Radar was married, worked at multiple jobs, graduated from college and served as a deacon in his church. On the surface he appeared to be normal. But he wasn’t. His actions were planned months in advance. He enjoyed the suffering of others and craved the excitement and control that killing gave him. I would say that these traits are consistent with Factor 1 traits. As noted by Bartol and Bartol (2011), “Factor 1 appears to be associated with planned predatory violence” (pg. 181). Or The text notes that Factor 1 traits are aligned with planning and premeditation (Bartol and Bartol, 2011, pg. 181). Rader seemed to enjoy the planning phase of his murders. He went to great lengths planning them out.
   When he killed the Otero’s …..
   Notice the reference supports and is supported. It can be used as a direct quote or to paraphrase the author. The next paragraph will add support by explaining a particular event in the video that support the author’s conclusion as supported by the reference.

   Example 2 – Not good

    

               Rader was a Psychopath. As defined in the text a psychopath is, “a person who demonstrates a discernible cluster of psychological, interpersonal and neurophysical features (Bartol & Bartol, 2011, pg. 171). Rader killed at least five people. His crime spree took place over 20 years. He was married and a father. He even worked in a church as a deacon.

   The reference doesn’t support and isn’t supported in the paragraph. It is used as a definition only. As a result the paragraph is baseless. Your references should support your statements. At this level your references should be spaced out in your paper to support your ideas. If you have three or four references in the same two paragraphs or they are bunched at the start or end of your paper something is likely wrong.
