    The criminal justice field has many different career paths, positions, and departments and agencies. Some of the departments and agencies include the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and the National Institute of Corrections (NIC).

    Research 2 agencies, departments, or bureaus that function in the field of criminal justice.

  1. Criminal Justice

    This paper will center on the two criminal justice agencies, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The FBI agency incorporates five different departments. These include the surveillance investigation team, Linguist, Intelligence analysts, Special agent, and Forensic accountant.  Each department specializes in a significant area and works in tandem with other units to develop a solution (Selden, 2020). Contrary to popular culture, agents work in a different array of fields with various forms of expertise. On the other hand, the DEA incorporates different departments. These include Special agents, Aviation Division, Special response team, Special Operation Division, and Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program. These units are considered the lead for domestic enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act, sharing concurrent jurisdiction with other agencies (Selden, 2020). The FBI position that this paper will discuss its duties is the Intelligence analyst. On the other hand, the DEA position that this paper will discuss its responsibilities is the Special Response Team position.

    Question 1

    FBI’s Intelligence Analyst Position/Role

    The FBI Intelligence role’s primary duties include gathering, analyzing, and evaluating data from law enforcement, surveillance, and other intelligence platforms to prevent or anticipate a crime (Tromblay, 2020). The Intelligence Analyst team often designs and maintains databases among other applications that can assist in the investigations. With adequate information, analysts create a comprehensive report or presentation of the results (Selden, 2020). The Intelligence analysts are known to operate hand in hand with the local, federal, and state agencies providing valuable insight to law enforcement and national security stakeholders. Among other types of evidence, the results that are attained assist the FBI agents in making informed and organized decisions.

    DEA’s Special Response Team Position/Role

    The DEA formally developed and regulated its Special Response Team (SRT) to eradicate the gap separating tactical procedures by field operators and those requiring functional tactics due to eminent risks. SRT operatives are often exceptionally prepared to use different weaponry systems and approach tactics. Due to the DEA profession’s private nature, SRT preparation procedures and activation obligations are considered profoundly sensitive, not accessible to the citizens (Drug Enforcement Administration, 2017). Examples of the SRT tasks include high-risk arrests, transportation attacks, air infiltration, active monitoring, administration of high profile people such as dignitary and witness security, tactical inspection and interdiction, high-level breaching, and tactical preparation of other members, and rural and urban criminal investigations. Covertly established in different parts of the country, DEA SRT squads are often prepared to react to a practical geographic territory with limited training and information. 

    Question 2

    The FBI Intelligence Analyst position is a role that its effectiveness can be negatively affected by vagueness, ambiguity, and generalities since it centers on collecting and analyzing information from different sources. Intelligence analysts require information that is accurate and reliable. Vague and ambiguous in this department reduces the possibility of the unit’s adherence (Tromblay, 2020). They may result in the inconsistent interpretation of information collected and shared. On the other hand, vagueness and ambiguity may affect the DEA’s SRT team’s effectiveness since it may generate wrong or exaggerated information that may mislead the SRT.

     

     

    Question 3

    Credibility is an essential feature in all aspects of life. Credibility plays a vital role in both the Intelligence Analyst team and the SRT. For instance, both the SRT and Intelligence Analysts position requires reliable information to make accurate decisions. Information that is not credible may mislead both the FBS’s Intelligence Analysts team and DEA’s SRT, leading to wrong arrests or mistaken identities. The SRT needs accurate information to assists in their activities, such as arresting or protecting individuals (Drug Enforcement Administration, 2017). Moreover, the Intelligence Analysts team relies on credibility to share the right information with other units. Credibility ensures that these individuals receive accurate and reliable data.

    Question 4

    Critical thinking is a vital aspect of all careers. The SRT utilizes critical thinking on different occasions, such as conducting high-risk arrests, protecting witnesses, and searching for fugitives. During these activities, the SRTs are often using critical thinking to assess the locations and how they will access these locations. On the other hand, The FBI’s Intelligence analyst utilizes critical thinking when evaluating the credibility of the information collected (Tromblay, 2020). For instance, when data is shared concerning an attack, the Intelligence Analysts utilize critical thinking to evaluate the attack’s cause, develop approaches that can prevent the attack, and select the right unit to deploy where the attack will occur or occurring.

Training Needs Assessment

Introduction

Training and development are very instrumental, especially in the current operational context of most organizations that are endeavoring to enhance optimal throughput from the entire resourceful areas of the organization. Training improves employees’ expertise; it gives room and space for ascertaining key crucial extents of employees’ development (Towler, et al. 2014). In order to establish whether employees have the reading level necessary to succeed in a training program, I would employ various techniques as discussed in the following section.

First, I will conduct formal interviews and tests that call for reading abilities, experience, and skills. In specific, I would carry out written interviews and tests for the employees at the workplace that would incorporate excerpts that best suits the employees’ reading level for them to read and respond to its related questions. This excerpt, for example, will be based on the objectives of the training, the content, and prior practice settings. This training need evaluation would help to identify employees’ reading behavior and the gaps to be addressed in the training program, which in return would benefit the organization and employees from new training prospects (Gupta, 2011). This will enable me to identify what employees need to know in so far as technical or communication knowledge is concerned, and what they are capable to do in terms of mental or manual skills to realize the intended results and the disposition to execute their roles (attitude). However, it should be noted that, the ability of employees to understand what they read does not resonate with their reading level (Cain, 2011).

Furthermore, I would employ an employee performance appraisal interview to identify previous and contemporary performance to find out an area that needs action (Franco-Santos, Lucianetti, & Bourne, 2012). All these are written documents or material that need to be read and interpreted, hence will help in assessing the reading level essential to thrive in a training program.

On the other hand, I would use self-assessments, surveys (Garvin, Edmondson, Gino, 2008), and questionnaires. These are all techniques with a regular written format that call for reading. They can be structured based on the attitude of employees, employees’ job content, the standards of employee performance in line with efficiency and outcome, or on the expertise required to execute the roles of the job proficiently (Verrell, McCabe, 2015). In this analysis, I would be able to establish the reading level based on how they respond to the questionnaires and the way and the degree they use to evaluate themselves.

Lastly, I would employ focus group discussions which provide an open atmosphere for employees to engage in open written questions on various training requirements as I listen to the way they read and articulate their points out. I would ensure that the topics for discussion are all written, and they should be read within a given period of time before being discussed. This helps in knowing the reading level. Additionally, I would employ desk studies for employees on the organizational documents and the analysis of the records which uses secondary information to help in the identification of training needs (Garvin, Edmondson, Gino, 2008). Employees would be required to give their report which will help me establish their reading level essential to thrive in a training program.
