Assignment

Page of 1 3 CLDV210C WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2 LENGTH: 2-3 double-spaced pages DUE DATE: 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 28 For this assignment, choose one of the two options you didn’t pick last time to write about Antigone or one of the Plato texts. If you chose the creative option for WA#1, this time write the connection or analysis option. If you chose the connection option for WA#1, this time do the creative option or analysis option. If you did the analysis option for WA#1, this time do the creative or connection option. The goal is to do one of each type of assignment over the course of the semester. Here’s an explanation of each option you have this time. CREATIVE OPTION (ANTIGONE “FANFICTION”) Write a story inspired by a character or situation in Antigone. Ways to do this include rewriting an event in Antigone from an alternative perspective, writing a “missing scene” (something that wasn’t part of the original text, but could have been), transforming the plot of Antigone so that it goes in a different direction, or creating a new version of Antigone set in modern times. Feel free to write from a particular character’s point of view (“in first person”), from the perspective of a narrator, or in dialogue form. To figure out what story to write, think about the characters, scenes, and issues in Antigone that were most compelling or least resolved. What would you have liked to know that the original text didn’t tell you? Whose perspective would you have liked to see? What if some key element of the story were altered or the characters made different decisions? What aspect of the play would work out differently in the twenty-first century? Asking such questions may give you ideas for how to put a new spin on a character or situation from Antigone by writing your own story (or play) in your own words. You are welcome to write in poetry or in prose, as a narrative or as a play, but keep in mind that since poetry and dialogue usually takes up more space with fewer words, assignments written in those formats may need to be longer than usual to be substantive. PERSONAL CONNECTION OPTION (ANTIGONE or APOLOGY or CRITO) Write about a character or situation in one of these texts that connects with something you went through. Explain the character or situation in the original text. Then explain in detail how it connects to something similar that you experienced. In what ways does the text shed light on your own experience? How would you compare and contrast the character’s behavior to your own? Your goal is to write thoughtfully about your own specific experience while showing knowledge and insight about the text that you’re relating yourself to. Here are a few possible connections to explore – but I encourage you to come up with your own! • connect Apology to a time when you were accused of something you didn’t do. • connect one of the Plato texts to a time when you had to decide whether to do the right thing even though it was dangerous to you or take the easier, less honorable route. • connect Antigone to a time when you confronted an authority who was oppressive and unjust. • connect Antigone to a time when you were unnecessarily extreme or abused your own power. • connect Antigone or one of the Plato texts to a time when you did something unusual that met with disapproval from your community Page of 2 3 ANALYSIS OPTION (ANTIGONE + THE PLATO TEXTS) If Socrates took a position in the conflict between Antigone and Creon, whose side would he be on? Write an essay arguing either that Socrates would ally himself with Antigone and oppose Creon, or that Socrates would ally himself with Creon and oppose Antigone. Base your response on what Euthyphro, Apology and Crito reveal about Socrates’ ideas, opinions, and values. Writing a good paper depends on (1) understanding Socrates’ perspective as expressed in the Plato texts (2) understanding the perspectives of Antigone and Creon as expressed in the Sophocles play (3) being able to make connections between Socrates’ ideas and the ideas of Antigone and Creon Since there is evidence on both sides –– in other words, there are areas where Socrates’ ideas match Antigone and areas where Socrates’ ideas match Creon –– essays that explore opposing evidence are most likely to demonstrate competence with these texts. GUIDELINES FOR ALL THE OPTIONS Formatting: Use 12 point Times New Roman and one-inch margins. Double-space evenly (without extra spacing between paragraphs) for two to three pages total (longer if you are writing a play or writing in poetry for the creative option). Don’t waste space. Your three-line heading should ONLY include your name, class section (CLDV210C), and option chosen (Creative, Connection, or Analysis). Give your assignment an original title, centered above the text. Using the Texts: Use only the assigned translations of Antigone and the Plato texts posted on Blackboard. To cite quotations from Antigone, use line numbers (numerals only). To cite quotations from a Plato texts use the Stephanus number/letter combo (again, number and letter only). Underline or italicize the names of texts when referring to them as such. However, when you are referring to Antigone, Euthyphro, or Crito as people and not as the names of texts, you shouldn’t italicize their names. Submitting: Save your document with a filename that includes your last name. Using the SafeAssign link in the Submission Portals area, upload your file in MS Word or pdf format. If your original file is in another format, export your doc to Word or pdf before uploading it. Essays unreadable by SafeAssign will have to be resubmitted and will be marked late accordingly. Mixed-Up Words: To keep your professor in a good mood while reading your work, don’t write “trail” when you mean “trial” or “persecute” when you mean “prosecute.” Refer to the handout on easily mixed-up words in the Writing Guides content area. Note on Academic Honesty: No paper should include any unassigned sources or “outside research,” whether credited or uncredited. Including any plagiarized material means an F for the assignment without the opportunity to revise. Please refer to the Plagiarism and Academic Honesty section of the syllabus for more information. Page of 3 3 Grading: This assignment is worth 14% of your final grade and will be given a simple letter grade of A, B, C, D, or F, based on the criteria for each option. Creative Option Grading Criteria: • Did you write a story showing original thinking, style, and perspective? • Did your story substantively explore your creative concept, following the instructions for the creative option? • Did your story show familiarity with and understanding of the original text and the Collaborate Ultra sessions that covered it? • Was your story written with clarity, using standard paragraph and sentence structure, appropriate word choices, and correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization? • Did your story follow the assignment guidelines, including instructions as to length, heading, font, title, spacing, margins, filename, text, and citations? Personal Connection Option Grading Criteria: • Did you convincingly link your experience to the text in a way that sheds light on both? • Did your essay substantively explore the topic you chose, following the instructions for the personal connection option? • Did your essay show familiarity with and understanding of the original text and the Collaborate Ultra sessions that covered it? • Was your essay written with clarity, using standard paragraph and sentence structure, appropriate word choices, and correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization? • Did your essay follow the assignment guidelines, including instructions as to length, heading, font, title, spacing, margins, filename, text, and citations? Analysis Option Grading Criteria: • Did your essay make an insightful and coherent argument that was supported with textual evidence? • Did your essay substantively explore the topic, following the instructions for the analysis option? • Did your essay show familiarity with and understanding of the original text and the Collaborate Ultra sessions that covered it? • Was your essay written with clarity, using standard paragraph and sentence structure, appropriate word choices, and correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization? • Did your essay follow the assignment guidelines, including instructions as to length, heading, font, title, spacing, margins, filename, text, and citations?

Answer

My Personal Connection to Antigone

My personal connection to Antigone is a topic that I still find very sensitive. It relates to the reaction of Antigone and Ismene to the death of their brothers. In usual circumstances, it is expected that the death of a family member, whether good or rogue, will be met with so much sorrow. The grieving family will still be sad and want to bury their loved one rather than leave him to rot in the wild or in the mortuary. Unfortunately, there is always so much controversy on how criminals should be treated upon their death.

A few years ago, my brother was arrested for engaging in violent crime. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. As a family, this was very devastating, especially since we had already lost our parents and my brother Michael was meant to care for us. My sister felt betrayed by his actions, and her anger worsened over the years. Instead of forgiving him and helping him through to become reformed, she never wanted to visit him or even talk to him. I, on the other hand, was willing to help him become a better person. I knew there was no excuse for what he did, but I also understood that he was trying to get us a better life though through the wrong means.

On one fateful day, we got a call from the correctional facility informing us that he had passed away. Michael had gotten into a fight with another inmate who stabbed him to death. They wanted to know if we could arrange for his burial, or have the facility take care of it. I was devastated so I broke down crying, mourning for the loss of my dear brother. My sister, on the other hand, was unmoved. “He deserves it!” she said. “There is no excuse for his reckless behaviour knowing very well that he was supposed to take care of us.” She suggested that acquiring any funeral expenses for a criminal was a waste of useful resources. He deserved to be buried without honour.

Since we wanted different things, we disagreed and got into an argument. I believed that as a Christian, we should be able to forgive his transgressions and bury him with honour as the only family we had left. My sister could not hear any of that. She felt that the law was right to put him away for 30 years, and since there was the option of having the facility take care of it, we should not get involved with the criminal. She was embarrassed of being associated with him. The society already sets itself apart from people who have been incarcerated. Rather than give them a second chance, the ex-convicts are always treated as the people they were before reforming.

I was disappointed because of the expectation that my sister would want to bury our brother. Instead, she wanted nothing to do with even after his death. We could not agree, just as Antigone could not agree with Ismene on the right course of action. Just as Antigone had to bury Polyneice on her own, I also buried my brother without the support of my sister. A few years later, I got a call from my sister asking to be shown my brother’s grave. Finally, she was feeling guilty of her actions, just as Ismene regretted her actions.
