.QUESTION
The Sketch OR Painting
Respond to ONE of the following discussion prompts:
1. Because drawing is often the first expression of an artist’s idea, does this mean that it is superior to other media? An initial sketch or a doodle on a napkin could hold more insight into the idea in its pure state than a carefully refined or labored print or painting. What is your opinion? Discuss, using examples to illustrate your argument.

2. Painting is widely regarded as the most popular artistic medium and is the one that most people associate with the practice of visual art. Discuss why this might be. Why not sculpture or architecture? Is there one medium within painting, for example oil paint, or tempera, that most represents this phenomenon?

Answer
Painting as an Artistic Medium
Painting is widely regarded as the most famous artistic medium, and most people associate it with the practice of visual arts, unlike architecture and sculpture. This is mostly because painting promotes creative insights and requires intensive and deep thinking triggering the brain part that enables creative insights. When people look at a painting, they can connect with the painter’s thoughts and the emotional intensity in the painting. Paintings transcend perception to reflect people’s spiritual, emotional, and psychological state, making people associate more with visual art because it produces their intangible feelings and memories (Lumen Learning, 2021). Most people relate the painting’s message with the events that meant a lot in their lives and would love to keep the painting for themselves as a symbol of reflection.
There are different mediums of painting, such as watercolors, graphite pencils, acrylic paints, oil paints, pastels, and charcoal. Oil paint best represents this phenomenon because, since the 1500s, it has been the dominant medium. Most painters associate themselves with the use of oil paints in their work because oil gives a glow and richness to the color pigments (Lumen Learning, 2021). Oil paints have various mediums and solvents to choose from, which one can use to change the state of the paint, including drying time, transparency, and consistency. Some of these solvents aid in thinning the paint to get a lighter shade. Unlike the watercolors, which are difficult to paint due to their unpredictable and unforgiving nature, making them hard to control. Once a mistake is made, it is not easy to rectify it.
