The American dream stipulates that anyone can prosper in a nation where everyone has a dream irrespective of their origin or social class. Through nobility, courage, and willpower, the American dream can be realized rather than chanced. This understanding of the American dream’s meaning has been re-evaluated through artwork, activism, and books or literacy work. This essay, therefore, explains how the re-evaluation has changed my understanding of the American dream. Moreover, it reflects on John Lennon’s song, imagine, to concur with my belief of hope for the American Dream.
Over time, my understanding of the American dream has changed considering the necessities arising from the current happenings. Initially, my understanding of the American dream entailed or focused on equality for all Americans to realize their individual dreams through hard work, courage, and willpower. It was about creating equal opportunities for anyone, irrespective of their origin or social class. Currently, my understanding of the American dream has changed to living in peace, love, and accord, regardless of religion, nationality, race, or social class. Moreover, the dream goes beyond America to living in harmony with the rest of the world.
Notably, John Lennon’s song, Imagine, symbolizes hope to most Americans. Consequently, based on the song, I believe there is hope for the American dream. For instance, from the song, the American dream would be easily achieved by eradicating Americans’ stratification in terms of gender, race, and social class. As a result, everyone would be treated equally in terms of opportunities and resource allocation. Additionally, the song inspires togetherness as a conduit of achieving the American dream. The singer imagines of the erasure of geographical boundaries to enhance unity between America and other nations. Also, the song emphasizes on togetherness as a spirit of unity of the Americans to realize a common goal – the American dream.
