LAW SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: e.g. flag football, moot competition organiser
I was a timid fourteen-year-old who had newly been transferred to a boarding school after the drastic changes that occurred in my family. My parents were going through a separation, and my mother opted to send me to a boarding school in the hope that I would not be involved in the drama. Having experienced the better part of my childhood years as an only child of two parents, it was extremely difficult to adjust to the changes that came with living in this new environment. My Classmates would tease me and call me names because of how different I was from them. For a long time, I remained defenceless and depressed and this had a significant impact on not only my academic performance but also my physiological well being. My despondency was further heightened by the fact that the family-life I knew of as a child was falling apart. I would cry myself to sleep every night and on three occasions, I contemplated suicide.
My experience opened my eyes up to the pain and agony experienced by children whose families experience drastic negative changes like separation, divorce, bereavement, and the like. With time, after overcoming the hurdles that were before me then, I became scrupulously conscious about the welfare of the aforementioned cluster of children. I came to realize that whereas children are by nature vulnerable, their vulnerability becomes even more pronounced when their families experience drastic negative changes. In circumstances such as my family’s, the real victims are the children. This realization drove me to strive to fight for the welfare of this group of children.
In line with the unique calling I received, I am currently a member of a non-profit organization that in-part routes for the welfare of vulnerable children. I have been working in this organization for the past two years. In collaboration with our state’s department of Social Services, we do diligent follow-ups that are focussed on safeguarding the rights and welfare of vulnerable children. In line with this, I intend to use my legal education to practise law within the non-profit organization and in other spheres as a defender of the rights and welfare of vulnerable children. I am fully committed to this course and my career will solely be driven towards the aforementioned direction. It will be the honour of my life to take part in the Hybrid J.D program.
