Jimmy Santiago Baca is the author of the memoir "A Place to Stand". He introduces readers to his past life experiences of pain, injustices of the prison system and the kind of abuse he had to endure throughout his upbringing. The essay evaluates the type of affliction Baca goes through throughout his childhood, how it shaped his adult life and its impact on the kind of choices he, later on, decide to take.
Baca shared a sorrowful dissolution of his family when he was 5years old by describing his father’s alcoholic nature and domestic abuse, which eventually led to their mother’s abandonment. His mother left him and his brother Mieyo for a white man known as Richard, and after that, they end up at their grandparent’s place, who later on gave them up to an orphanage. His upbringing in such a hostile non-conducive environment made him learn to hide his emotions, and violence was always his first resolve to handle issues. In return, this always caused him to end up in detention centres.
Baca’s experiences as an abandoned teenager and his fight for survival in an unforgiving society influence his decision of becoming a drug dealer, which eventually lands him in a maximum prison for five years. The author, after that, takes us on in his daily prison life and on how he taught himself to read and write, which later on made him develop an interest in writing and poetry.
