Reflection
( MY PRESENT JOB IS A HOSPICE NURSE AND I AM TAKING PMHNP)
Reflect back over the term. What one thing did you learn in the course that you were able to apply in your work during the term? What one thing are you most looking forward to applying to your career in the future. What future trends may influence how nurses use evidence to improve the quality of patient care? How will this course content help prepare you for certification in your chosen specialty?
A reminder of the course objectives may help you reflect on this term:
- Explain the purpose of nursing research in an evidence-based practice environment.
- Differentiate qualitative and quantitative research in terms of philosophy, methodology, and outcome.
- Critically analyze various types of research methods, designs, and evidence-based practice for scientific merit.
- Investigate the literature to gain knowledge related to a select problem in education, administration or practice.
- Evaluate the reliability, validity, and typical outcomes of instruments commonly used for nursing research.
- Explore ethical principles as they relate to research and evidence-based practice.
- Design an evidence-based practice project that incorporates scholarly inquiry applicable to a select problem in nursing practice, administration, or education.

A Reflection Back Over the Term
Gathering evidence from scholarly literature and applying the evidence in addressing a clinical nursing problem is among the key points that I have learned from the course. The course equipped me with knowledge and skills that I can employ in gathering and critically evidence-based practice, research designs, and methods for scientific merit. I was able to apply this knowledge and skills to addressing my clinical problem PICOT question “In patients who have experienced stroke(P), how does being a smoker (I) compared to a nonsmoker (C)developed higher risk of recurrence (O) during the first 1 year after stroke?”. Moreover, undertaking this course has equipped me with knowledge on different theories that can guide evidence-based practice in healthcare including The John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Model, Kotter’s 8-Stage Planned Change Model, Chaos theory, and Lewin’s Planned Change Theory. Being aware of the Chaos theory and the fact that a single, minor change can impact other aspects in healthcare organization, I am looking forward to the employment of Lewin’s Planned Change Theory in introducing change in a healthcare organization where I will be working in my future practice and improving care quality as argued by Chien (2019). This theory provides a simple three-stage process for integrating change in an organization without disrupting other departments or aspects of healthcare delivery. These stages include unfreezing, change, and refreezing respectively and should be embraced by change implementers prior to the integration of the change into the healthcare system (Mitchell, 2013).
In my opinion, future trends such as integration of novel technologies such as artificial intelligence in healthcare and the emergence of novel diseases illnesses as it has been witnessed in the case of COVID19 will greatly influence how nurses employ evidence in improving patient care quality. Nurses will have to response quickly to addressing emerging illnesses and employing technologies in addressing such diseases using evidence-based practice. Swiftness will require rapid response as simple theories for implementing change as Lewin’s Planned Change Theory may gain wide acceptance. Besides, the John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Model also enhances appropriate as well as rapid application of current research and best practices in practice (Dang & Dearholt, 2017). As such, this model will also experience widespread use in healthcare in the future. Therefore, having equipped me with skills and knowledge that can be employed in resolving a range of clinical problems suing evidence-based practice, I believe that this course has adequately prepared me for my certification in psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), which is my field of practice.
