    1. QUESTION

Describe the evidence to be collected and the specialists or crime laboratory units that would be needed to properly analyze the following crime scene to answer the given questions.

On Monday, September 26, 2011, a small airplane believed to be transporting members of a Mexican drug cartel and a shipment of drugs and firearms of unknown type or size recorded a short “mayday” call at 8:05 a.m. before crashing into a farmhouse in Laredo, Texas. Local police report that the abandoned farmhouse is frequented by homeless individuals, and there may have been several inside at the time of impact. On impact, the airplane’s nearly full gas tank caused a fire that incinerated those within the plane and those within the farmhouse.

As an investigator at the crash you need to deduce the following:

How did the airplane malfunction to cause the crash?
Who was on the airplane and in the farmhouse?
What were the contents of the airplane’s cargo?

Air Crash Crime Scene Investigation

Whenever an airplane crash occurs and a crime scene investigation needs to be conducted, it is important to note that depending on the unique prevailing circumstances, various types of evidence will need to be collected and various specialists and crime laboratory units will need to involved so as to answer the underlying questions. This paper provides an analysis of a case study that narrates of an airplane crash that occurred on Monday, September 26, 2011 so as to determine the evidence that will need to be collected and the specialists/units that will be involved so as to answer the underlying questions.

In order to dig out the root cause of the crash and how the airplane malfunctioned, any available portion of the plane will need to be collected and an analysis of the said evidence be conducted by a forensic engineer (Fisher & Fisher, 2012). Through this, any information that will lead up to an unveiling of the potential causes of the crash will be unearthed. Another relevant evidence that will assist in understanding the cause of the crash is the mayday signal. A recording and analysis of this piece of evidence should be done and the crime laboratory unit that will be responsible for this exercise is the voiceprint analysis unit (Fisher & Fisher, 2012). Any available samples of gasoline will also need to be collected and examined so as to gather any relevant information regarding the cause of the crash. The crime laboratory unit that will be responsible for this exercise is the physical science unit (Fisher & Fisher, 2012).

An important question that will need to be answered in the course of the crime scene investigation is; who was on the airplane and in the farmhouse? The pieces of evidence that will assist in answering this question are the remains that would potentially be discovered at the scene. The specialist who will be in charge of the process of collecting the remains is a forensic odontologist (Fisher & Fisher, 2012). Once this is done, the biology unit will step in to analyze any tissues that can be obtained from the remains (Adams & Byrd, 2008). This unit will collect any relevant information about the DNA and blood type of the victims.

It will also be important to establish what the contents of the airplane cargo were. In this regard, all the pieces of the airplane cargo will need to be collected and a physical science unit would evaluate any drug evidence. In case the parts of the cargo material reveal the presence of firearms, a firearm unit would then need to be in place to assess the firearms and gather the relevant information.

Whenever a crime scene investigation is conducted, various types of evidence will need to be collected and various specialists and crime laboratory units will need to be involved so as to ensure that all relevant information appertaining to the crime has been gathered.
