Analysis and Application of Course Learning Objectives to Professional Practice
Question One
The course has supported the learning objectives in many ways. When it comes to the learning objective on analyzing selected nursing theories using established guidelines, the course focused on analysis of the appropriateness and relevance of various theories in practice, education, and research including cognitive theory, Lewin’s Planned Change, Kotter’s 8-Stage Planned Change Model, the theory of Comfort , and research-based evidence. When it comes to the learning objective on researching the employment of theory in generating scientific knowledge as it connects with the creation of a road map for advancing the nursing profession, the course focused on key issues such as employing theory in guiding research. In this area, I managed to discuss how cognitive theory can be employed in guiding research as it evident in the article by Minian et al. (2020). In relation to supporting the learning objective on the demonstration of creativity and critical thinking in applying theoretical models and frameworks in advancing the nursing profession, the course focused on several areas of learning including factors that critical thinkers should embrace prior to incorporating or implementing. Examples of such factors are the ability of the evidence to support change, appropriateness of the evidence, and feasibility of the change (Spector, 2010).
In relation to the learning objective on change and chaos theory, the course focused on the description and application of chaos theory to a situation in healthcare and how theories of such as Kotter’s 8-Stage Planned Change Model and Lewin’s Planned Change Theory can be employed in introducing change in a healthcare organization. When it comes to the learning objective on critiquing holistic nursing theories, models, and concepts that are related to nursing practice, research, education, and management, the course focuses on a range of theories and concepts, and models. These models, theories, and concept include theory of development in nursing, nursing skill mix, research-based evidence, nurse as a change agent, the theory of Comfort, the John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Model, Chaos theory, Kotter’s 8-Stage Planned Change Model, and Lewin’s Planned Change theory among others.
Question Two
Materials learned in the course in relation to learning objectives will be applicable to my professional practice in many ways. For instance, I will employ the research-based evidence and John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Model in gathering evidence on clinical problems. Furthermore, I will employ change theories such as Kotter’s 8-Stage Planned Change Model, and Lewin’s Planned Change theory in introducing evidence or change in my future healthcare organization. I will also employ theories such as cognitive theory in guiding my future research in my field of practice. Apart from being applicable to my professional practice, the course learning objectives will prepare me for certification in psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) by equipping me with relevant nursing knowledge and skills examined in my area of practice. Earning the PMHNP certification requires that nurse students take and pass the examination on the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner administered by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) (Nursing License Map, 2021). The knowledge and skills that I have acquired from this course in relation to different nursing concepts, models, theories will come in handy during by examinations.
