Analysis of Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White
Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White is the English version of Cerisiers Roses et Pommiers Blancs that was originally written in 1950 and performed in an Orchestra by Perez Prado in 1955. The musical piece features an artistic design that showcases exemplary application of unity and variety. This paper seeks to analyze the song and identify various characteristics and features of music in the piece.
From the piece by Perez Prado, it is notable that there are two musical ideas; one encompassing a falling and rising trumpet tune before the melody would resume, and the other involving a different change in tone color without a trumpet after the melody breaks. Each section is time appropriately to enhance the unity of the piece. For instance, the first musical idea begins at 0:04 and steadily slides up and down as the melody develops up to 0:44. The second section takes over at 0:45 and ends at 1:01, to be taken over by the first musical idea. The same rhythm is repeated thrice within the piece, to bring out the variety of instruments used and their unity in the whole piece. The elements contribute to unity and variety in that each idea displays various instruments used in the piece and their importance in achieving the rhythm. As in 0:45 – 1:01, the trumpet is not played to give rooms for other instruments – showing variety in the piece. The resumption of the same in the rest of the piece illustrates the importance of each instrument in the whole music – showing unity.
The dynamics of the music is cleverly entwined to the whole rhythm to create serene coexistence of the various instruments used. The music is louder as it begins and the trumpet reaches its climax. This is followed by a soft entrance of other instruments, which relaxes the listeners. What is more, the timbre of the whole piece is designed to perfection as the trumpet colors the tone of the music at the beginning of the melody. The general pitch of the whole piece can be categorized as medium. However, certain instances occur when the pitch is high – especially as the piece opens and when it closes.
In this masterpiece, the trumpet – in most instances – feature more than the rest of the instruments. However, the piece cannot be performed by a solo performer due to the unity that each musical instruments bring to the whole piece – making it better performed by an ensemble. This style of music is usually categorized as Jazz music with various characteristics. The characteristics include; instrumental breaks, stabs on bass, blue scale, swung rhythms, as well as a 12-bar blues chord pattern. The song, which was turned into a Mambo song, had a main purpose of serving as the theme song for the movie Underwater. Nonetheless, I believe that the piece could serve the purpose of relaxation with romance in it. This is majorly since the piece specifically invokes (to me) a feeling of relaxation and an urge of dancing with a partner.
