Analysis of The Epic Simile in Book XXI (Lines 512-521)
In lines 512-521 of the epic simile in Book XXI, likening Odysseus to a singer or an individual who is skillful when it comes to playing the lyre is of great significance or relevance to the expertise of the hero. This simile tends to emphasize the smoothness and ease with which Odysseus performs what cannot be performed by anybody at all (Jasper 51). Comparing Odysseus to a singer does not only possess a vivid significance, but is also pregnant. It is vital to note that the comparison of the hero to a singer has been done in many occasions.
Apart from lines 512-521, there exist other places within the epic where Odysseus bears a resemblance to an artist figure or an artist. For instance, in several instances, Alcinous told Odysseus that he narrated his tale or story like a singer, in a skilful and proper manner, and that the hero’s manner of narrating his tale held the Phaeacians entranced (Jasper 51). Moreover, it can be noted that Eumaeus gazed at Odysseus as a person gaze or stares at a singer (Jasper 51). It can be noted that the singer exalts his audience and his calling by likening his performance to that exhibited by a great hero prior to the fabulous Phaeacians. However, there is also the implication that the action and the action’s song are in unified in that the person who performs the deeds is making the sing and listening to its resonance. Once more it can be noted that the simile striking and simple, and it exists among the several similes within the Odyssey derived from skilled trades.
