Reflection Paper based on Annabel Lee, by Edgar Allan Poe
Born in 1809, Edgar Allen Poe leads in the creation of mystical poems with gruesome romanticism and tragic ending. The world’s popular literature, Annabel Lee is not any different from Poe’s usual themes. Annabel Lee was published in 9th of October, 1849 after a few months of Poe's mysterious death. Poe's literature works seem to be related to his life that was filled with unhappiness and confusion. The poem, Annabel Lee, outlines pure and innocent love between two souls. It evokes the compassion of an individual losing the love of his life.
After reading the poem, I feel that it is the most expressive poem I have ever met in my life. The poem makes me feel that Edgar had a lover who died due to some chill from the clouds. The major concept that I learned from the poem is how Edgar relates the title Annabel Lee to his story. He makes Annabel the star of the poem. She is the only thing that matters in the speaker’s world. It is not astonishing that the speaker names the poem after Annabel Lee. I must agree that the title of the poem introduces the audience to the sound of the girl’s name. Edgar repeats the name Annabel Lee seven times in the poem. Nonetheless, several lines of the poem end with the sound ee, reminding the reader about the title. The title is reflected in the lines of poem making the reader know that the poem is about a girl named Annabel Lee. The title is the first thing to read, therefore, I must agree that Poe uses the title to effectively introduce the reader to the major theme of the poem.
Although the title Annabel Lee outlines the main theme of the poem, the author ought to have added some love context on it. Edgar Poe does not just mention the title alone, but he expresses a lot of love for her too. He states that "The angels, not half so happy in heaven, Went envying her and me…” (Poe); He expresses an ending love for Annabel Lee. In fact, I feel that Poe loved and will still pour his love for Annabel for the rest of his life. Introducing the concept of ‘love' in the title of the poem would attract more attention from the audience. The way he uses imagery and symbolism to express love strikes and its artistry can only be compared to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. He draws my emotions and feelings of affection that walks with me in the entire poem. He uses symbolism to show that although, even if Annabel is gone, the love for will not fade away. The expression of Annabel’s beauty makes an audience imagine the kind of lady she is. “…Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee…." (Poe) Wow, an image builds by the author depicts a true definition of an angel.
The lines of the poem introduce a new concept to the readers. Dissimilar to the traditional love stories that have met in my life, I cannot characterize Annabel Lee as a traditional love story. I say so because the poem is gorgeous, horrific, tragic and unique and it is about two souls whose love are attacked by an angel. For the days I have lived, I have never learned that angels can attack people. Though his style of writing, the author takes me through a journey of how love can sometimes be and that the unexpected can happen. However, the strange things that people meet in the course of love should not make them stay part, but make the bonder stronger. True love is unique and a strong bond, just like the affair between Edgar Poe and Annabel Lee. The tragedies people often meet in love should never scare them away, but keep them stronger.
To sum up, I must admit that Edgar Poe’s poem is not a traditional love story, but a unique piece showing the difficulties that people go through in love. The title of the poem enables the audience to learn how the author values and love the girl. Reading Annabel Lee enables me to learn that love is a unique journey that can sometimes be sweet, but also tragic and horrific. organ.
