Answer

Application of Evidence-Based Practice in the Workplace

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a clinical decision making method where healthcare providers use research based on knowledge to guide their decision about delivery of care. EBP is significant since it aims at providing the most effective care available with the purpose of improving the patient’s outcome. It is in this context that nurses in various settings are adopting EBP that incorporates research findings into their decisions and interactions with clients. As a result of it positive significance based on several studies, EBP is also being applied at my work place.

One of the challenges that my workplace has been experiencing is the increased number patients falling from their beds. According to the study conducted by Christiansen Ellis (2019), patient fall, particularly from their beds, reduces patient outcome in hospitals and has made hospitals unsafe place for vulnerable patients such as the old. One of the ways in which EBP is applied in my place of work is the use of bed alarms to prevent falls of patients from the bed. Evidence suggests that with use of bed alarms, healthcare providers can be alerted when the patient is about to fall, hence the use of alarm beds to prevents falls at the facility I work for.

Secondly, my workplace has also been facing an increased rate of resident elopements, which expose the lives of patients to a variety of harms including death. In order to prevent elopement, the facility has purchased and installed four door codes and wander alarm bracelets that notify employees when a resident gets outside of the facility. According to the study conducted by Christiansen et al. (2020), four door codes and wander alarm bracelets reduce cases of elopement by 80% by alerting the employees when any resident is about to move out of the designated areas.

In conclusion, the institution that I work for believes that evidence-based practice (EBP) is an important r approach that facilitate positive patient outcome. It is in this context that the hospital has introduced bed alarms and bracelet alarms to prevent patient falls and patient elopements respectively.
