Our problems with attention and memory are universal. Donald Broadbent discovered selective attention demonstrating that everyone has a similar way of processing information. Especially concerning the things we temporarily remember, where we pick and choose the information we store. Broadbent understood that information had to be filtered to select what should be stored in one’s short-term memory. This system pushed for the recognition of primacy and recency effect, as it suggested a bias in memory. Understanding that memory problems are a universal thing is crucial to strengthening one’s memory. Particularly realizing the memory bias in one’s short-term memory can allow someone to figure out a certain study pattern that works for them.
