Answer
Barriers Holding Nursing Practice
Certain barriers confront effective implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing practice. Both individual and organizational barriers tend to impede implementation of EBP. Individual barriers among nurses include language barriers, lack of appropriate knowledge, awareness, and skills relating to use of EBP, poor nurse’s attitude on use of EBP, and lack of professional characteristics. Personal barriers may also include lack of necessary experience in using EBP (Alatawi et al., 2020). Organizational barriers, on the other hand, include lack of supervision and support, limited resources, lack of training and education, and time restrictions (Alatawi et al., 2020).
Organizational barriers can be resolved through provision of necessary resources. These include human and non-human resources such as Internet connection, training manuals, technology infrastructures, devices and other forms of hardware and software (Khammarnia et al., 2015). Nurses should be educated and supported to improve their ability of use computer systems and technological tools to search and read evidence-based literature. In addition, nurses should be supported to improve their English literacy levels or be trained and educated in the language of their preference (Khammarnia et al., 2015). Nurses ought to be made to feel as having professional autonomy, encouraged to stick with professional standards and competencies, and be given amble time to go through EBP through maintenance of adequate staffing at any particular time (Alatawi et al., 2020). In addition, nurses need to be empowered to be able to identify valid and reliable EBP materials and guidelines since some evidence may actually cause harm to patients. Lastly, nurses should be fully involved in development of strategies that are aimed in resolving barriers to evidence-based practice (Alatawi et al., 2020).
