    1. QUESTION

    What you have to do

To ensure you become familiar with the requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) Part 3.12 you are required to submit details on the provisions for Energy Efficiency.

This task has been designed to enable you to demonstrate your awareness of building control legislation relevant to Energy Efficiency in your State or Territory.

    Part A

    1. All students

List the applicable BCA Performance Requirements Part 2.6 Energy Efficiency for your State or Territory. Include explanatory information and State or Territory variations.  Variations are located in the additions section of Volume Two of the BCA.

    1. All states and territory’s other than NSW

    1. Using Acceptable construction practice 3.12.0 Application of Part 3.12, detail which option you will use to assess the TAFE BUILD 203 plans to comply with the energy efficiency Deemed to Satisfy Provisions 3.12.1-3.12.4;

Option 1 Energy Rating — 3.12.0(a)(i) to achieve the required energy rating and comply with (B) to (F) for energy-saving features such as the testing and installation of insulation, thermal breaks, compensation for downlights, floor edge insulation and detailed provisions for building sealing.

Option 2 Elemental Provisions — 3.12.0(a)(ii) to satisfy all the detailed provisions including meeting the Total R-Values of roofs, walls and floors, the glazing allowances and the air movement requirements. These detailed provisions also include the testing and installation of insulation, thermal breaks, compensation for downlights, floor edge insulation and detailed provisions for building sealing.

    1. Detail how you are going to meet the requirements of 3.12.0.1 Heating and cooling loads.

    1. C) NSW STUDENTS: are required to submit a BASIX Report based on the attached building plan TAFE BUILD 203. Where it is found that the plans do not support BASIX Compliance provide a summary of the modifications/inclusions required to achieve BASIX compliance.

Note: Educational registration is available on the BASIX website.

    Part B

    All States and Territory’s

You are required to assess the TAFE BUILD 203 plans against the provisions Part 3.12 Energy Efficiency. Use the table to demonstrate what deemed to satisfy provisions will be used to achieve a BCA compliant design.

Assessments are to be made in accordance with the most current version of the Building Code of Australia (unless state or Territory variations require otherwise).

Note: ensure all State or Territory variations nominated in the BCA are selected.

Answer

Part A

State or Territory applicable: New South Wales.

Nominate the location and the climate zone you will be using

Climate Zone Map Part- 1.1.1 Definitions

Climate zone 4: Hot dry summer, cool winter.

Part 2.6 Energy Efficiency, check the variation for your State or Territory, outline what it is, if it’s applicable and where it is not find the applicable Performance requirements and complete the table.

Performance Requirements for your State or Territory are to include all variations.

Table

Applicable Clauses

PERFORMANCE PROVISIONS

P2.6.1 (e)

The building should use solar heating

P2.6.1 (f)

The air movement should be able to assist with the cooling of the house.

P2.6.1 (g)

Ventilation should also be from the fitted windows to assist in cooling thus saving on  energy.

P2.6.2(b)

Energy will be sourced from the council but also maximized through the building design as illustrated in Part B below.

V2.6.2.2

Heating loads and cooling loads will be equal to the reference building or below since it is a Climate Zone 4 development.

OPTION Choice__________________________________

Detail how you are going to meet the requirements of 3.12.0.1 Heating and cooling loads.

To meet the heating and cooling loads, the external walls of the buildings should be shaded, and its insulation increased by R-value 0.5. The surface density should also be greater than 220kg/m3. In-slab heating should also be done and a cooling system for the slab also provided. For the roofing, the total R-value should be 4.1 onwards with the upper surface absorptance limited to 0.4. Ventilation on the sealing should also be limited to a minimum of 1.0% of the entire ceiling area. The suspended concrete floors should not incorporate any in-slab heating or cooling.

NSW Students to submit BASIX Certificate and Certificate summary as an attachment.

Part B

All States and Territory’s

You are required to assess the TAFE BUILD 203 plans against the provisions Part 3.12 Energy Efficiency. Using the table to demonstrate what deemed to satisfy provisions will be used to achieve a compliant design.

Assessments are to be made in accordance with the most current version of the Building Code of Australia (unless state or Territory variations require otherwise).

Make the document as user friendly as possible.

List only the applicable Deemed to Satisfy Provisions.

Marks will be forfeited if you include information which is not applicable.

Table

3.12 Energy Efficiency Requirement

ACCEPTABLE CONSTRUCTION

Use the applicable State/territory variations

3.12 Energy Efficiency

3.12.1 Building Fabric

Absorptance value for the roof should be 0.4 or less while the roof should have a minimum R-value of 4.1 or over.

3.12.2 External Glazing

For the building with balconies and for both buildings with verandas, the walls must have its R-value at 2.8.

3.12.3 Building Sealing

Ceiling has to be insulated but also ventilated but limitedly.

3.12.4 Air Movement

Ventilation has to be limitedly done by ensuring that it is fixed and aggregated with an open area of about 1.0% based on the total area of the roof.

3.12.5 Services

In-slab heating should be done with in-slab cooling system fitted for the hot summer periods.

As a Climate 4 zone, the heating load and cooling load should be less or equal to that of the reference building. Based on the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme, the calculation of the energy efficiency should be over ‘6 stars’.
