Answer

  • Case 11: Canadian Coastal Shipping and CETA: Some Lessons From Four-Market Deregulation Cases

    Abstract

To address possible consequences of CETA on the domestic shipping markets, Laribi and Guy write up this cases study focusing on how the negotiations between Canada and the European Union came to an agreement concluding in the formation of the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA). The paper highlights the economic problem that faces maritime transport after CETA’s concession. The case study employs the “Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) paradigm as a research methodology. The paradigm successfully shows its application in the maritime transport sector. The findings indicate that authors were able to identify four cases faced in cost shipping deregulation across four countries of the Philippines, Greece and Taiwan, and New Zealand (Laribi & Guy, 2016). To understand the study's main objectives, the authors applied for a literature review on international trade agreements between these countries in question. The case study was the most appropriate method as it allowed for broader understanding across the countries within a short period.

    Opportunity

Labiri and Guy applied a simple writing model that can easily be understood by the target audience. Moreover, the article phrased as a case study is properly arranged in subsections that allowed the reader to obtain information with minimal constraints. The writers effectively employ the use of tables and diagrams to provide convincing data that leads up to a significant conclusion. For instance, figure 1 for SCP Model used for maritime transport gives the links that exist in structure conduct and performance of international trade agreement.

    Weakness

The explanation of significant issues associated with the deregulation process in details provides a backbone for understanding the paper; however, the authors overlook many main issues that need addressing. Such issues not addressed include how and where the global trade rules are applied and the lack of a discussion on the need for protection on local companies. In addition, the authors fail to provide statistical values for their findings. This can reduce the reliability of the information contained in this article. In conclusion, the report is a good piece for understanding economic models, but it requires improvements to meet the objectives.

    Learning and Reflection

The paper offers a scope of ideas and thoughts essential to the understanding of the maritime market sector. The authors evoke a sense of understanding the intrinsic value of companies engaged in the maritime transport in relation to the consequences of the CETA treaty. This information is critical in providing information that helps understand the deregulation process and implementation.

Surprisingly, the paper offers new information in the cases studies conducted across the four nations in question; the Philippines, Greece and Taiwan, and New Zealand, in how CETA has led to the increase in business and investors, an increase in demand for coastal services, and in increased in containerized cargo shipping. The cases studies conducted in the article are essential in showing the positive impact of CETA on maritime transport.
