Change Activity
Different classical strategies of change can be implemented in the case of fall prevention. Murray (2017) suggests that the use of walking assistive devices is effective in preventing falls among vulnerable patients. Normative- re-educative strategy is considered as the most effective approach to implement this change suggestion.
Classical Strategies
Through the use of the rational-empirical strategy, it is evident that change which involves the use of assistive walking aids among the high-risk patients can only be effective in preventing the falls if the affected population is provided with enough factual evidence which is also convincing. According to Nikols (2016), rational-empirical strategy maintains that reason is the only factor that can motivate people to make fundamental changes to their attitudes.
Normative-re-educative, on the other hand, strategy suggests that change can only be effective if interventions are implemented to change the normative beliefs of a person (Nikols, 2016). For instance, changing the behavior of elderly patients with immobility challenges to rely on walking assistive devices whenever they get out of bed by changing their belief that this action is for their own safety and health would be effective in preventing falls.
Lastly, power-coercive strategy refers to a strategy which involves the use of authority to influence people to ensure that they do what they are told (Nikols, 2016). In the case of fall prevention, the high-risk patients can be coerced to use the walking assistant devices at any time they get out of bed as a means of preventing the fall. This can be achieved through the use of guards who ensure that patients adhere to this guide.
Approach for use
With an aim of preventing the falls, normative-re-educative strategy will be utilized as a result of its high level of effectiveness. Evidently, educating the patient to understand that they have to use walking assistants whenever they are out of bed is effective in falls prevention since they will ensure that they abide by this guide for their personal benefit. Notably, this strategy will also be economical as it will not involve the use of other staff members, such as nurses or guards, to ensure that the patients adhere to the requirement.
