Answer
The Most Serious Type of Vehicle Theft
The consideration of the reason for car theft is considered an essential factor when on the part of officers when investigating cases of vehicle theft (Swanson, 2019). The reasons for stealing vehicles may fall under four categories including fraud, professional theft, joyriding, and temporary theft (Swanson, 2019). Among these categories of vehicle thefts, temporary car theft is the most dangerous form of vehicle theft as it is employed in perpetrating all forms of crimes including serious crimes such as murder and robberies relative to other types of car thefts.
Fraud is often executed by the vehicle’s owner or a different party operating on the owner’s behalf, with the aim of profiting at the insurance company’s expense. As such, this crime majorly poses a threat to insurance companies. Professional vehicle thieves employ various means including salvage, stripping, switches, chop shops, and export to other nations to dispose the stolen vehicles (Swanson, 2019). Even though the identification of the stolen vehicle and its components can be difficult once it has been stripped or chopped, this apparently formidable job has been, partly, made easier by the establishment of standardized number systems for identifying vehicles (Swanson, 2019). As such, this form of vehicle theft is less threatening.
According to Swanson (2019), joy riding theft is often perpetrated by teenagers aged between 15 and 19 years. This nature of vehicle theft does not pose a significant risk to the vehicle owner and the vehicle as it is always executed with the intention of driving the vehicle around and abandoning it. Temporary car theft involves the stealing of a vehicle momentarily for use is the execution of other crimes such as drive-by shootings or robberies after which the stolen vehicle is abandoned (Swanson, 2019). Therefore this form of car thefts is the most dangerous at is poses a threat to everyone and may result in all forms of crimes including high level ones.
