Childhood Schizophrenia
My thoughts are that child schizophrenia is difficult to diagnose at early age. Parents of a child with this disorder might think that their child is extremely smart from an early age and not associate their symptoms with anything serious. For instant, the parents in the video did not think much of their daughter erratic and short sleeping patterns. Although they knew that infants were supposed to sleep for a longer period of time during the early days, they did not think anything was wrong with Jani napping for only twenty minutes. Childhood schizophrenia is a severe chronic psychotic disorder with debilitating effects. It is similar to the one exhibited by adults and adolescents.
For a child to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, they must meet a certain criteria within the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Unlike adults, children with this disorder experience fewer hallucinations and elaborate delusions. Children schizophrenics experience more visual hallucinations that are difficult to distinguish from the normal fantasy play. For example, in the video, the parents were not concerned when Jani experienced these visual hallucinations. Even when she had so many imaginary friends, the parents attributed it to her young imaginative mind.
Common childhood schizophrenia symptoms, such as disorganized behavior and speech are also similar to those in other childhood onset disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Also, the extreme mood swings that schizophrenic children constantly suffer coupled with the violence are also classic symptoms of bipolar disorder. In the video, the parents finally got the diagnosis at five years when Jani became extremely violent and her hallucinations were out of control, and the doctors ruled out all the aforementioned conditions.
