    Attend a committee meeting in your health care organization. If you are not currently employed in a health care setting, you may elect to attend a committee meeting at another company, a community center, a local school, local chamber of commerce or other professional organization.

    Observe the interactions between committee members and the process used by the committee to arrive at decisions.

    In 500-750 words, describe the function of the committee and the roles of those in attendance. Describe your observations of the interactions between members of the committee and determine whether the process used to arrive at decisions is a form of shared governance.

    A minimum of two academic references from credible sources are required for this assignment.

Collaborative Decision making through shared Governance

The concept of shared governance has increasingly gained significance in recent years as organizations from virtually all industries attempt to involve member from different levels in decision-making. Shared governance, as a concept, relates to the system of rules as well as policies serving to engage individuals or groups to partake in decision-making process (Mayo Health System, 2010). Health care has particularly adopted the concept of shared governance as attempts are made to improve care environment since it is related to accountability for decisions, researching issues prior making a decision, as well as respect for divergent opinions.

            After attending a committee meeting in my health care organization, the function of the committee as well as the roles of the attendants were evident throughout the interactions made. More so, the committee played the crucial role of a facilitator during the meeting. The function involved the committee acting as a guide or meeting leader for those in attendance (Ott & Ross, 2014). This role is increasingly vital in shared governance systems because all members are required to contribute to the meeting. Thus, it becomes important that the committee provide some form of leadership without necessarily taking the reign. During the meeting, this was evidenced by the committee assuming a backseat and allowing the attendants to dominate the proceedings. This is a major characteristic associated with shared governance and implies that members of the organization are at the center as far as decision-making is concerned. In essence, members of the organization from all levels are actively involved in decision-making rather than follow leaders/committee’s directions and policies. It can be said that the committee moved from directing and controlling of members in attendance to guiding, coaching, as well as facilitating (Huber, 2013). The implication is that the hierarchical reporting the nurses are used to gives way to a rather loose hierarchy in which interaction is key. Indeed, the key goal associated with shared governance revolves around collaboration with respect to decision-making. Altogether, the committee and those in attendance collaborate to arrive at decisions with members contributing to the meeting and agreeing on one thing.

            Telling of a shared governance system during the meeting was interaction between members. Indeed, one individual did not control the interactions that played out during the meeting. From nurses to other committee members involved in the meeting, they seemed prepared to assume new roles as well as relationships as far as relating with each other was concerned. Nurses, for instance, exercised influence or power during the interactions as they put their contributions to the meeting forward. In fact, they sought to coerce other members in the meeting to accept their opinion as they felt doing so would be beneficial to the organization. The indication is that the interactions between members were loosely structured and assumed different directions in accordance to member’s opinion (Hart, Bridgett & Karau, 2001). As well, the communication was direct as members put their point on the table unrestricted by protocols and policies determining interactions or communication in the organization. The interactions flowed during the meeting as long as members kept the agenda. Any point or opinion raised by one member during the meeting was deliberated and had to be accepted by the various parties. Altogether, process involved in the meeting signified a form of shared governance.

Conclusion

            In conclusion, the concept of shared governance continues to gain a foothold across industries as organizations attempt to engage different stakeholders in decision-making process. Health care has adopted the shared governance model, and this is evidenced in leaders who are allowing others members to partake in decision-making process.
