Comparison of US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and Thomas Jefferson’s Letter

The United States of America constitution is a supreme document that contains laws that govern the land. This document is among the critical documents in America’s history. Among them is the declaration of independence, which the Continental Congress approved on 4th July 1776 that proclaimed the separation of the thirteen North American British Colonies from Great Britain. The 1802 letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist is also a critical document in America’s history. The letter obeys the First amendments of the US constitution that created the separation between church and the state. The three documents mentioned above compare several aspects, including the people’s independence. This paper, therefore, provides a comparison of the three documents in respect to themes and importance in their order of existence as well as what on what the signers though about the separation of church and the state or God from government.

The three vital American documents – the US constitutions, the declaration of independence, and Thomas Jefferson’s Letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802 – have a similar freedom theme. In the American constitution, the first amendment gives authority that denies Congress the powers to make laws with respect to the establishment of religions or prohibiting freedom to exercise. Additionally, the US constitution safeguards freedom of speech, the press, freedom of assembly, and the right to petition the government to redress complaints. In similarity, the declaration of independence seeks to champion the freedom of the 13 colonies of the North American British to be independent. Consequently, they pursue declaration to free the people of the British’s oppression. Hence, the state, whose decision affects the general public, was never confused with a personal decision – faith. Consequently, the separation of God and the government (you have already chosen separation of church and the state, do not bring in God and the Government; you were told the two are NOT the same thing, an OR implies you just choose one- and you chose church and state) was thought of as acknowledging a Supreme being more powerful than the government. Therefore, there ought to have been a distinction between the two powers.

In conclusion, the three documents as mentioned above compare several aspects, including the people’s independence and freedom. The documents confirm the need for independence and freedom. Moreover, the document’s sequential existence made their importance to achieving freedom attainable.
