QUESTION

 Concepts or Theories

Over the past three weeks you have been exposed to many concepts, theories and terms related to psychology. Now is the time to make personal application of some of the terms you have studied. This personal application of concepts learned is one of the things that makes psychology such an interesting area of study. Not all courses of study have such a direct application to our own lives. You will select four (4) of the following terms or concepts. You will read and research at least three scholarly sources and then identify, discuss and place each concept in proper context. After you have identified each concept you will then explain ways each concept can be applied to your own life with examples. I hope you enjoy your research and the personal application.

Please select four of the following concepts or theories.

1. Social changes in life-span development
2. Memory

4. Issues related to gender and sexuality
5. Motivation and emotion
6. Personality
7. Health psychology, stress and coping strategies
8. Psychological Disorders and other Mental Health Issues

Answer

  • How Psychological Theories Apply to My Life

    Introduction

The aim and significance of psychology are to live a happy and healthy life. Psychology can be defined as the field of study of human activities and mental processes. This field is highly relevant to a social degree in our daily lives since it helps in outlining pro-social activities and antisocial ones (Ratner, 2020). Many psychological assessments exist to estimate social impairments and difficulties in communicating. Psychology teaches us the best way to share effectively with others, interpret the feelings, inspirations, and emotions of the people we associate with daily. This is substantial for the general mental health and life permanence and for creating understanding. However, most people understand psychology as a mental disorder and therapy. Four concepts of psychology that apply to my personal life are memory, motivation and emotion, personality and stress, and health psychology.

    Memory

Firstly, Psychology is applied to my daily life through memory. Memory is the mental structure that receives, stores, organizes, and remembers information. The three types of memory are sensory, short-term, and long-term memories. Sensory memory is not deliberately arranged; it permits one to retain sensory information impressions when the creative inducement stops. Short-term storage holds information for a short period. In contrast, long-term memory holds much information indefinitely, and as a teacher educating kindergartens, it allows me to utilize the three forms of memory. For instance, I usually use my sensory memory to recall students and their personalities after giving them assignments or responsibilities in class for documentation purposes. For example, if the child is a slow learner or a quick learner and needs most to improve on their personalities.

    Personality

Secondly, psychology is also practical in my regular life because of my personality. Personality can be defined as the individual dissimilarities in one’s thinking, sensation, and conduct pattern (Yavuz, & Kayhan, 2020). As a psychology theory, two main areas have evolved. The first relates to the constant distinctions existing among individuals. For instance, the field of personality centers on categorizing and illuminating comparatively consistent human mental features. The second significance highlights those abilities that make everyone similar, and that differentiates psychological human from other beings; it leads the personality philosopher seeking consistencies amongst individual that describe the quality of man and the features that inspire their lives. Type A and type B are the two types of personalities: type A character is considered reasonable, time conscious, hostile, and violent. On the other hand, type B is patient and relaxed (Yavuz, & Kayhan, 2020). I have a type B personality because most times, I tend to go with the flow. I am very patient with most things in my life; as a kindergarten teacher, I have to have many patients to understand things slowly and quickly. Most children are shy, and they need a caring and understanding person to make them teachable. They cannot be rushed, and it takes them time and patience to understand what you are teaching them.

    Motivation and Emotion

Another way in which I apply psychology to my life is through motivation. Motivation is the practice that stimulates, upholds, and controls activities to achieving a goal (Coon et al., 2019). I need to improve and get better in my profession daily; I am motivated to work and achieve my goals. Apart from my work, I also attend evening classes to increase my knowledge of the job, and motivation is a necessary form of attaining this. I am always motivated to accomplish my chores, for example, and I manage to do them within a specific time as I planned. Emotion is a strong feeling that originates from a person’s situations or relationship with others (Berridge, 2018). Psychology ties both motivation and emotion together in several ways. For example, as a teacher, I need to increase my education, and I have always wanted to expand my career. However, the perception of attending classes and working on assignments daily has been holding me back, judging by the amount of work that I have to accomplish daily. I have motivated myself to continue with my studies as it will be an added advantage in my career. My motivation and emotion changed when I rejoined school for further studies.

    Stress

Finally, I apply stress and health psychology in my daily life. Stress is defined as a feeling of psychological or physical pressure to adjust to something. My day is usually busy juggling between work and school, especially during exam time. I usually feel stressed about working full-time and attending classes. It’s ordinarily exhaustive to accomplish my assignments from work or when I want to study for exams is stressful at times. Health psychology deals with the intellectual and behavioral ideologies that one can utilize to avoid falling sick and promoting physical health (Berridge, 2018). Stress can cause different forms of diseases. For example, chronic stress can wear one down and cause depression. It can also lead to insomnia or a weakened immune system. When I become stressed after accomplishing my work and finishing my assignments, it could cause me to have consistent headaches. What I usually do when I experience such, I typically plan early for every task, and I typically take some time off to relax.

In conclusion, psychology is the study of human activities and mental processes. We apply it in our daily lives most times without realizing or thinking about it. It is used in many ways in our daily lives, such as communicating with other people and improving our communication and well-being. I use it in my everyday life by motivating myself, managing stress and health, and my personality and memory.
