  1. QUESTION

     consumer's response analysis

(Scenario #2) Melody Hadley just returned from a year in Japan as an exchange student. To see her old friends, she is planning a dinner party with a traditional Japanese menu. As she is grocery shopping, she recalls her first experience with sushi—a raw fish delicacy she plans to serve at her party. When her host family first served it to her, she was not sure she would be able to eat it. Nothing in her American upbringing had prepared her to eat raw fish. However, she did not want to offend her hosts, so she smiled bravely and downed the sushi. To her amazement it was delicious, and she now enjoys sushi frequently. She is sure she will have a lot of fun persuading her friends to try it too.

    Assignment:
In the short cases that follow, a variety of psychological variables and social influences are operating to influence a consumer's response. Each member of your group completes a post for their assigned scenario (#1 through #4 in the first column corresponds to the numbered scenarios below) and provide the following information:

Identify two relevant psychological variables and briefly explain how each item is illustrated in the case.

Answer

        1. CONSUMER’S RESPONSE ANALYSIS

Consumer satisfaction is a priority in the service industry. However, to ensure that consumers are satisfied, the service provider must be aware of different variables operating to influence the consumers response. These variables include cultural, social, personal, and psychological factors that cause consumers to develop product and brand preferences. Melody Hedley’s first experience with sushi, a raw fish delicacy on the traditional Japanese menu, has social, cultural, and psychological factors that affected her response to the food. First, she grew with American culture, and the culture had not prepared her to eat raw fish. However, it was Japanese culture, and all who grew up in Japan enjoyed eating sushi. Despite her unfamiliarity with sushi, she never wanted to offend her host; therefore, she smiled bravely and ate the meal. Family, a social factor played a role in her response to eating despite her unfamiliarity.

Additionally, there were psychological factors in play during Melody Hedley’s first encounter with sushi. First, learning affected her response towards the food. She was an exchange student, and sushi was a traditional food only familiar with old aged people who held on to the Japanese traditions. Furthermore, learning in America, she could not interact with Japanese tradition in the school environment, as the schools only hold on to American traditions.  In addition, her attitude and belief towards the food affected her response. Before tasting the food, she already developed a negative attitude toward the food and convinced herself she would not eat it. Hedley’s belief system of not eating raw fish made her respond negatively toward sushi on a first encounter. However, after the breaking of variables that barred her from trying sushi, she realized that it was a delicacy after all. Therefore, to ensure the satisfaction of customers, service providers and producers should analyze their customers, be aware of the culture they have grown in, their attitude and beliefs, and social values.

explanation of at least two opportunities that exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy-making

Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might make to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy-making. Be specific and provide examples.
Revisit the Congress.gov website provided in the Resources and consider the role of RNs and APRNs in policy-making.
Reflect on potential opportunities that may exist for RNs and APRNs to participate in the policy-making process.

          ANSWER

          Nurse Participation in Policy Making

The first opportunity that registered nurses (RNs) and advance practice registered nurses (APRNs) have to participate actively in the policy-making process is by taking up leadership roles as provided by Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2019 (Congress.gov, 2020). The second opportunity is by taking up advocacy roles. American Nurses Association (2020) encourages nurses to be effective advocates to improve patient care, the profession, and improve access to high-quality and affordable care. Some of the challenges that may hinder nurses from taking up leadership positions include lack of appropriate training and education requirements. These challenges can be addressed via continuous professional development for example gaining of more professional and practice experience and through engagement in higher education, which can enable nurses to take up advanced practice roles. Lack of motivation and lack of knowledge about policy-making process may hinder nurses from advocating on behalf of their patients or the profession. Nurses need to be educated that they have ethical, professionals, and social responsibility to advocate. It can enhance their willingness to participate actively in policy-making process.  Educating nurses about policy-making process is also useful so as to improve their advocacy skills and their readiness to advocate on behalf of their patients or the profession (Jurns, 2019).
