    1. QUESTION

In this discussion, you will explore the current state of mental health and mental illness in the United States. Unlike in prior discussions, where a discussion question was provided, you are tasked with developing a question for discussion that you will provide to the class. Think critically, reflect on the lesson materials provided in this unit, and develop one question that you want to present to the class. In developing this question, be certain to supply an explanation as to why you believe this is a critical point of discussion.

Read each of the following reports:
The Doctor is Out: Continuing Disparities in Access to Mental and Physical Health Care (2017)
Preparing for the Unimaginable: How Chiefs Can Safeguard Officer Mental Health Before and After Mass Casualty Events (2016)
State Mental Health Cuts: The Continuing Crisis (2011)
Post a meaningful question for your classmates to consider which explores a critical aspect of mental health raised in one of the reports.
Provide an explanation on why you believe this is an important question.
Select at least two questions from your classmates to answer their question based on your perspective and additional research.

Answer

Current State of Mental Health and Mental Illness in The United States

Various reports have been created to provide the extent of the prevalence of mental health illness in the United States as well as the factors that impede access to mental health services. One of those reports is that by NAMI (2017) titled “The Doctor Is Out: Continuing Disparities in Access to Mental and Physical Health Care.” The following is one of meaningful question for my classmates which explores a critical aspect of mental health raised in the NAMI report.

  1. What are the primary barriers of access to mental health services in the united states?

The choice of this question was based on the various ways that it ensures that the classmates make sense of the NAMI report, especially on the manner in which it provides the various impediments towards the provision of mental health services in the United States. this question is also important because it enables the classmates to have an in-depth understanding of the current state of the mental health in the United States especially in the lack of parity for people with mental illness. The report has demonstrated that despite the passage of the Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008, there are still significant barriers which keep away many of the Americans from the access to mental health treatment as well as support. This question enables my classmates to understand these barriers and thus, start to find out ways that they can ensure policy changes towards ensuring better access to mental health treatment and support.
