    In 1997, Scott Plous, a psychology professor at Wesleyan University developed the Social Psychology Day of Compassion. Having participated in the day myself, I elected to incorporate it into this class. The outline of the assignment is directly from Dr. Plous’ course.

    The purpose of this assignment is to put the course material into action in daily contexts, applying social psychology research findings on attributional biases, bystander intervention, conflict resolution, empathy, and so on.

    Part I: Participate in the Day of Compassion

    To complete this assignment, choose a day that will be your “Day of Compassion” and try your absolute best to live each minute of that day as compassionately as possible. In other words, for a full 24-hour period you should do your best to reduce suffering of others, help those in need, be considerate and respectful, and avoid causing harm to any living being.

    When carrying out this assignment, leave no behavior unexamined — from watching TV to eating lunch to decisions about giving time or money to others. That is, don’t limit yourself to simply holding the door open for a stranger or petting a lonely dog; think about all the unnecessary suffering in the world, and strive for the greatest impact and deepest level of compassion without being phony or insincere. It is up to you to define what compassion is and to decide how best to realize it.

    If you are already quite compassionate, try being compassionate toward groups you don’t often focus on, and even if your actions don’t differ much from how you normally behave, carefully observe and analyze what transpires during the day. If outside events make it difficult for you to participate on the designated day, or if you feel dissatisfied with your performance of the assignment, feel free to repeat the exercise on a later day.

    Note: To minimize any bias in social reactions, it is best if you do not tell others about the class assignment until after the Day of Compassion is over.

    Part II: Write About Your Experience

    You will submit a social psychological analysis of what the day was like. Here are a few sample questions you might address:

    How did you define compassion, and who were the recipients of your efforts?
    If your behavior was different than normal, which person did you like more: the “Day of Compassion you” or the “normal you”? If you preferred the “Day of Compassion you,” what are the psychological factors that prevent this “you” from coming out?
    What are the psychological costs and benefits of behaving compassionately? In your view, do the benefits outweigh the costs?
    How did others respond to your compassion? Do you think they noticed a difference in your behavior? What attributions did people make for your behavior, and why?
    If you wanted to encourage others to behave as you did during the Day of Compassion, what psychological techniques would you use? How can social psychology be used to foster compassion?
    If you were to predict your behavior one month from now, do you think it will be changed in any way as a result of participating in the Day of Compassion? If so, how? If not, why not?

  1. My Day of Compassion

    I began my Day of Compassion right from the moment the morning dawned on me on 1st November, 2020. Personally, I am naturally compassionate, always wanting to care for others and coming to the aid of helpless or less fortunate people around me. However, for today, I decided to been more attentive and go an extra mile, and people responded with appreciation and love to my actions, noticing that I was different that day. From my experience, I realized that compassion is an overwhelming yet invigorating feeling that goes beyond pity, to being part of someone’s pain and suffering; living right through their lives with them. It awakens one’s true humane feelings, creating a realization of the minute details around us that we often ignore (Gilbert, 2017).

    My actions this day were deliberately compassionate, from saying good morning to our guard, to offering him coffee, picking dangerously placed tools on the compound, to asking my neighbor who has been ill how he is fairing, and visiting a homeless camp as well as offering my services and donations to the nearest orphanage. The whole experience was truly touching, exuding the best feelings I have ever had, and proving to me that perhaps the sole purpose of mankind is to be good to others, and support each other. While I thought I was doing this for others, I noticed that such compassionate actions and thoughts are very effective in generating a positive aura in me at little costs, which reminded me of Ronnie Edry, an Israeli that has been showing love and compassion to Iranians. The benefits, thus, outweigh the costs.

    From my experience, I definitely love the “Day of Compassion me”, than the “normal me”, as it resonated well with empathy and happiness, being able to trigger in me a contagious positivity that touched everyone around me. My positivity, I observed, was able to dispel off antisocial behaviors triggered by group pressure and individuation. In order to be more compassionate, I would encourage people to be more empathetic, and promote connectedness (intragroup dynamic), which teaches us that humans are social beings who are interdependent (Gilbert, 2017). I feel that one month from now, the experiences of this day would have changed my perspective of life forever, and I will endeavor to be more compassionate and aware of needy cases around me, because being compassionate brings out the best in me.

Assessing Risk and Reward

The Nissan Motor Company is one of the leading automobile makers in the world. The Japanese carmaker has primarily enjoyed a successful run, allowing it to enter various regional and international markets such as the United States. However, the changing business environment was not favorable to the company in 2019. Notably, the cooperation recorded losses amounting to 7.8%. The experience pushed the management into making tough decisions, requiring almost all of its North American workforce to go for unpaid leaves.

In late 2019, the company announced that the decline in sales necessitated a two-day unpaid leave for the North American workers. The stated days for the vacation were January 2 and 3rd    (Chicago Tribune, 2019).  Notably, this move was a crucial decision for the company because of its conflicting impacts. Whereas on the positive side, it could help the firm minimize expenses, it threatened to affect the public perception of the company regarding employee welfare.

The rewards for the decision involved cutting expenses by not paying the workers on leave, which eventually would translate into reduced expenses. Another reward was that the decision could allow the company to optimize performance by evaluating employee performances then developing new milestones. However, on the low side, the company risked affecting its public image and brand name, especially in the North American market. As per Chakravorti (2010), the way an organization treats its employees influences the firm’s public perception. Thus, Nissan risked eliciting a negative public perception. With a distorted public image, the company could fail to revive its declining sales.

I would have advised the management of Nissan to utilize the Predictive Analytic perspective in determining the right decision to take. Ideally, the approach tries to predict what might happen in the future if particular decisions or actions are undertaken at the moment (Traymbak & Aggarwal, 2019). Looking at the situation at Nissan, the company needed to develop a goal such as increasing sales. After that, they would have made decisions aimed at realizing the set goal. In this regard, the predicted outcome could give the management an overview of whether more risks existed or significant rewards could be realized.
