Choose a book that has to do with death, dying, the afterlife, loss, grief, and/or coping. Once you choose your book, read it and focus on aspects of the book that relate to course material and lectures. Here is the layout of the book review:
- Introduce the book, identifying the author, the title, the main topic or issue presented in the book, and the author’s purpose in writing the book. Also include how the book relates to the class material or themes of the class.
- Provide an overview of the book through outlining each chapter or section of chapters, drawing out points that are interesting to you that are worthy of further discussion or exploration.
- Relate the book’s main points and themes to that of the course by including 3-5 concepts from the textbook. You can do this throughout your essay or in it’s own section. Please include a bibliography.
- Conclude your book review by giving your opinion of what you read – did the author do justice to the main theme or purpose of the book? What did you gain (or lose) through reading the book? Any final thoughts on how the book contributes to your understanding of loss, grief, death and dying? Any final questions that were left unanswered?
