Treatment for Dementia
Many elderly patients with dementia are known to have at least encountered one improper prescription incident. Elderly patients with dementia often need family support since they regularly forget to take their medication appropriately or overdose themselves. This is challenging since many family members assist with medicines that are essential for optimal results. Dose-related obligations are identified to contribute to care burden and stress (Kerns, Winter, Boyd & Etz, 2018). Family care providers are obliged to assist the elderly with dementia regularly by ensuring that the patients follow the prescriptions provided.
Prescribing medication for the treatment of dementia is a task that needs trained and observant care providers. A study advocates that in these modern times, the number of mortalities resulting from overdose or wrong prescriptions increases, particularly in elders with dementia. Dr. Anna Renom of University Hospital Parc de Salut Mar in Brazil indicates that dementia patients aged 80 and above living in elderly care homes have increased risks of receiving more potentially inappropriate prescriptions (Janus, Van Manen, Van Til, Zuidema & IJzerman, 2017). Some medications are not typically prescribed to elderly patients because the prospective side effects prevail over medicinal advantages. Inappropriate medicines are associated with increased chances of falls, resulting in injury or hospitalization.
As a prescriber, it is essential to consider the side effects of different medications and inform care providers in advance. Furthermore, prescribers should appropriately guide and advise the care providers about the measures they can implement to ensure that patients do not miss their medications or overdose. For instance, care providers can create a prescription chart to avoid confusion, overdose, and medication skipping.
