Answer
Dementia: From the Care Takers Perspective
Chenoweth, Jeon, Brodaty, Stein-Parbury, Norman and Luscombe, contributing authors of the Lancet Neurology Journal, maintain that patient-centered care improves patient outcomes among aged dementia patients compared to the conventional care. Chenoweth et al. (2009) used such metrics as frequency of falls, agitation and the level of independence to determine effectiveness of a given care or intervention plan. Cluster randomized controlled trial was used as research design, and involved randomly assigning urban residential sites to three different care plans; namely, dementia-care mapping, person-centered care and the conventional care. Care takers at each site received required training and support to deliver of each intervention. Outcomes were then measured using descriptive statistics, and included agitation, quality of life, hallucinations, falls, neuropsychological status and cost of treatment. Chenoweth et al. (2009) concluded that person-centered care and dementia-care mapping intervention are effective in reducing agitation and falls, and improving overall patient outcomes.
Chenoweth et al. (2009) sought to examine the efficacy of different care plans (dementia-care mapping, patient-centered care and usual care) on improving health outcomes among aged dementia patients. Researchers used primary research with a sample size of 289 patients in 25 care sites, which was fairly large to obtain more informed and conclusive findings. More importantly, using randomized controlled trial as the research design eliminated potential bias in participants’ selection, thereby, ensuring that the sample was a representative of the whole patient population. Researchers also made an appropriate choice of outcomes to measure effectiveness of given care plan outcomes used to determine the effectiveness of a given care plan such as frequency and severity of falls, quality of life, agitation and hallucinations because these outcomes relate closely to the key symptoms of dementia. Additionally, the research was conducted and compiled by seven researchers from different health faculties in various nursing and health care training institutions in Australia, which implies the findings and information presented is authentic, valid and authoritative.
In general, this article was quite informative, and hence useful to my understanding of dementia from a care taker’s perspective. For instance, a care taker for dementia patients in the future I have learned how patient-centered and dementia-care mapping can be used as evidence-based practices to improve the symptoms of dementia such as agitation, hallucination and falls.
