Derived Demand
The increasing frequency of harsh climatic conditions such as floods and droughts points to global warming. The need to reduce the impact of global warming has increased calls for decarbonization, leading to an increase in the adoption of clean forms of energy, such as driving electric vehicles. Decarbonization will, in the long term, significantly reduce the price of oil in the market. Currently, oil is expensive as it is among the frequently used source of energy around the globe. However, due to decarbonization, the adoption and use of electric vehicles all over the world will reduce the demand for oil in the market, thus causing its price to drop significantly. The need for traditional cars that use gas will fall, and with it, the demand for oil.
As the need for oil drops, the demand for metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt will increase tremendously. The increase stems from the concept of derived demand. The minerals will derive their value from their role in the manufacture of the batteries used in electric vehicles. Electric cars must come with a battery developed using the three metals. Therefore, as the demand for vehicles increase, so will be the demand for cobalt, nickel, and lithium. The intensity of mining the metals will increase to meet the new level of increased demand. Decarbonization and the need for clean energy sources will negatively affect the price of oil while increasing the demand and cost of metals such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium.
In conclusion, the level of derived demand hinges on the value of the end product from the raw materials. A reduction in the market for the end product results in a reduced need for the raw material. Therefore, the demand for oil will reduce globally as that of nickel, cobalt, and lithium increases.
