Answer

  1. Case Study: Perspectives in Psychology

    Case Analysis

    Cognitive Perspective

The cognitive psychology perspective involves the study of mental processes that takes place inside the brain of an individual. Wilhelm Wundt advanced the concept in 1879. The process is concerned with mental functions such as perception, memory, and attention. Primarily, it considers the human processing of information similar to that of a computer device. According to the facts of the case, there is a possibility that Andrea’s information processing system is altered. For instance, she takes time to look at herself in the mirror and derive negative perception of her body. It is likely that her eating disorder is due to maladaptive thought process concerning her personality and the way she appears. Thus, she perceives herself as overweight when she is underweight. Nonetheless, she bases herself of sense on how she controls her eating habit. She believes that self worth is based on the physical appearance.

    Psychodynamic Perspective

Sigmund Freud advanced the concept. He stated that the expression of an individual’s life is shaped by factors such as denial, repression, anal personality among others. The perspective holds that incidences in people’s childhood have significant influence in their future behavior. Individuals hardly express free will while making decisions, childhood experience, and unconscious mind plays important part in the decisions we make. The background of Andrea indicates that she started worrying about her weight two years ago when her parents were having problems and had requested for divorce. Thus, she started to manage her eating to make her feel more in control of something in her life. She was encouraged by people comments on her, as she got thinner. She is experiencing denial, she denies that fact that she is thin even if her friends talks to her about the same. Her personality is changing, as the only thing she derives pleasure from is being thin and athletic.

    Behavioral Perspective

Behavioral perspective defines the role of environment in influencing observable behaviors of individuals. According to the theory, people learn from their environment through classical and operant conditioning. The main proponent of the concept is Russian psychologist called Ivan Pavlov. B.F. Skinner also significantly contributed to the idea by introducing operant condition. Andrea’s behavior is influenced by her historical background and motives. For instance, he desires to maintain an athletic body to attract positive views from her friends so that she can feel good. On the other hand, the problematic nature of her family forced her to seek for an activity that would replace her troubles. Her eating habit was a response towards unmet emotional needs, probably while she lived with her parents. She is experiencing an unstable mental condition that is influencing her behavior.

    Socio-Cultural Perspective

Socio-cultural perspective assesses for the influence of the society to the behavior of an individual. That is, human learning is significantly a social process. The theory was advanced by Lev Vygotsky who believed that aspects of the society such as the family, parents, and culture contribute to the development of higher-level functions in individuals. The behavioral challenges experienced by Andrea can be attributed to her family environment. It is noted that she started developing eating challenges at the time that her parents were experiencing differences that resulted to divorce. Besides, the pressure to receive positive comment from friends drove her to practicing more hunger to get thinner.
