Discussion on Business Information Systems

Advancements of information and communication technology (ICT) and increased penetration of Internet has reshaped the manner in which businesses operate. Business systems have been transformed for the good. It includes the manner in which businesses relate and interacts with each other as well as how businesses deal with consumers. This essay highlights how ICT and the Internet can help to grow businesses, cost reductions and better consumer experience. The negative impacts of ICT and the Internet is also discussed.

The Internet and ICT enable an organization to expand their markets; perhaps globally, reach more consumers and receive feedbacks and address consumers concerns as soon as they emerge. Cost reduction is realized through utilization of relatively cheaper and far-reaching advertisement avenues such as social media compared with traditional channels such as radio, print and visual media. Market expansion through social platforms can influence business expansion and increased competence by meeting consumer expectations and addressing their concerns. However, organizations should address consumer concerns in timely in an appropriate manner to avoid negative repercussions such as damaged reputation and product recalls.

Employee retraining, education and management are necessary to avoid misuse of ICT and Internet resources for personal or unproductive courses.  For instance, a supervisor should monitor employees on whether they are using social media platforms for organizational benefits; such as advertising and engaging consumers or for personal courses such as playing games or chatting with friends.  Thornthwaite (2017) observed that there should be a boundary in monitoring employees over the social media; for instance respecting employee privacy and not dismissing employees basing on social media evidence.

Employees should be warned of stealing employer’s time by using Internet resources and social media platforms at the workplace for personal courses. However, ICT and Internet resources may increase employee performance and productivity when used for learning, communicating, and engaging consumers. Cervellon and Lirio (2017) stressed that an employer should encourage employees to be the active and positive representation of their organization in the social media.
