Answer
Diversity, Cultural Competence and Human Rights
Many a times, it is easy to forego the story while focusing on the glory – to not know the history of the success of a people. However, I have always been intrigued by the immense passion for work and the population growth of the Hispanics in the United States; often driving me to work with them. Well, from the YouTube video by The History Channel, it is evident that there is a lot to learn about this vibrant and versatile community (Wallace, 2013). I have learnt a great deal from this video, especially in regard to diversity and human rights within the Hispanic community. First, I have learnt of the passion that the Cubans had when they entered Miami and how they were able to transform the economy of the place. It was also satisfying to note that the American community decided to envelope these immigrants into their community by naturalizing most of them and allowing them to vote and even run for political seats.
From my field education experience, I have also observed several features of culture and identity from the Hispanic community that is unlike any other. For one, I have come to understand that the Hispanic community is typically proud of their culture and language; often speaking their native language wherever they are by themselves. More often than not, they would speak English when outside their community and communicate in Spanish when at home. This keeps them closely knit as a family and as a community. They are also supportive of each other, more like the video showcases, as they support their own businesses while they help each other grow (Shim, Eastlick and Lotz, 2000).
Due to this and many other information presented within the video, it is easier for me to present culturally competent services to my Hispanic clients as I am able to understand their history, their values, their culture, and their identity as a people. For instance, it is clear – from the video – that many Hispanic immigrants who have had the pleasure of securing legal citizenship, have had a hard time doing so. Understanding this helps me work with them closely as I understand and relate to their struggles as a community. Even more so, this would help me apply leadership in advocacy for human rights and social economic justice for Hispanic children and families. I can do this by elaborating and enlightening them on their rights and how they can navigate within the American society in order to champion their voice as they seek for equality and social justice.
