Answer
Drug dealing in the Open air Markets of Miami Dade County
Drug trafficking in South Florida and especially Miami Dade County remains one of the security threats in the region the government is grappling with. The rampant drug business in the area is associated with the readily available international supply sources, booming tourism, and import/export business supported by the multiracial population. Additionally, to reach a significant number of people, drug business in the region has taken an open-air market approach thus, reducing the interaction barriers between the drug dealers and the buyers (Lyman, 2013).
Operational wise, open-air drug markets are mostly located in urban areas where there is economic distress. Further, some dealers have a specific dealing point where the potential customers acquire the drug mainly situated along the transport channels and main terminals (Lyman, 2013). Lastly, over a long period, the markets grow in size, making it impossible to hide. For example, cocaine, which is the primary trading drug in Miami, is a compulsive drug that must be readily available for the addicts, hence the nature of the market. Furthermore, structurally, the market is operated in a hierarchical manner dominated by the freelance sellers (Lyman, 2013). However, most of the markets are dominated by family and racially-based organizations that dominate the trade.
Nevertheless, the Miami market is majorly controlled by cooperation’s who tops the supply chain. A large number of dealers in the open-air market results in spin-off problems such as traffic congestion around the main routes and terminals as the activities block the normal flow of traffic (Lyman, 2013). Similarly, trade encourages prostitution to acquire money for the next supply. Lastly, the business gives rise to street beggars who hope from place to place, looking for daily food supply and cash for the drug. Addressing these problems requires a concerted approach from the property owners and the security agencies to flush out the drug dealers who also double as beggars, thereby restoring order in the transport sector and bringing back communal peace (Lyman, 2013).
