Answer

  • Week 5 Discussion: Effects of Human Enhancement on the Relationship between the Military and Society

Human enhancement, as described in Allhoff et al. (2010) and Moreno (2006), is the biological or medical interventions introduced into the body with a view to improving performance, capability and competence, appearance, or overall wellbeing. While these interventions are opening up endless opportunities, they are raising many regarding what it means to be human and their good on the collective or societal well-being. Unlike in sports and elsewhere, human enhancement takes on a different meaning when applied in the military. The effects of human augmentation on the relationship between the military and society are, therefore, manifold. From an optimist perspective, enhancements in the military will help the soldiers gain a competitive advantage during conflicts and protect citizens from the country’s adversaries both in the present and in the future. This argument is partially supported by Allhoff et al. (2010) who used the Rawls’ difference principle to argue that enhancements for a few (soldiers) will enable them to better solve a nation’s security problems and improve the well-being of the broader society. However, seeking to improve military performance in war through human enhancement is open to criticism because the ultimate goal of humanity is to eradicate social upheaval and war in the first place so that fewer lives are lost, while still protecting the nation from external threats.

While some forms of human enhancement such as physical enhancement and restorative enhancement that allow soldiers to quickly recover from sustained physical wounds might be welcomed by a few, other forms, particularly cognitive enhancement, will significantly jeopardize the relationship between the military and society. Cognitive enhancements are designed to help soldiers quickly forget the painful memories as well as their actions and experiences on the battlefield. Altering the cognitive abilities of soldiers by erasing the memories of their actions in war is likely to influence them to commit more killings without remorse, causing society to have a negative perception of the military.

To sum up, human enforcement in the military has the potential to reduce or even prevent future deaths if used appropriately. However, if used in an offensive way, they can undermine human dignity and contribute negatively to the relationship between the military and society. This presents policymakers leaders in politics, military, science, religion, and other areas with an unresolved dilemma regarding how they can reconcile the interests of individual soldiers and those of the broader society when applying human enhancement technologies in the military.
