Effects of Misuse of Funds in Human Service Organization on Public Trust
Human Service Organizations based on their line of operations, which is helping the less privileged individuals in the society, normally enjoys public goodwill and even donations for the facilitation of their activities. However, most of these organizations misuse funds for their individual purposes instead of the stipulated activities of the organization. Misuse of such funds has a negative effect on public trust which includes loss of trust, goodwill, and reduction in donations.
An example of misuse of funds in human services organizations by an administrator occurred in arc of Hawaii where there was embezzlement of seven million dollars in March, 2017. ARC of Hawaii is a nonprofit organization serving children and adults of intellectual and developmental disabilities. The accountant, Lola Jean Amorin, was sentenced after she was found guilty of theft, money laundering, and other activities for almost 19 years CharityWatch Hall, 2020). as a chief accountant, she was solely responsible for the misuse of money from her former employer. The scandal has painted a bad image to the organization in the public domain which has led to adverse effects on public trust.
In reaction to this scandal, the general public has lost trust in the operations of the organization to the extent of demanding a recoup of the money. consequently, the organization has lost faith among its donors and contributors. For example, members of the public showed their distrust of the organization with some contributors losing faith in it ("KITV 4. (2018). The public commented as they as they expressed their disappointment.
In conclusion, the misuse of funds in public service organizations leads to a reduction of public trust. This consequently, leads to a reduction in donations due to lack of faith by contributors like in the case of ARC of Hawaii after the seven million dollar embezzlements.
