Answer

Part III: Essay Body Paragraphs

The provision of free college education to prisoners will lead to a decrease in crime rates and increased safety to the community. Prison education programs have been found to have a discouraging effect on the probability of engaging in future crime. Research by Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) indicate that close to 7 out of 10 of people formerly incarcerated committed a new crime (Lagemann, 2014). One of the reasons behind a statistic is that such people come back into the society without skills to make an earning. As such, college education is vital in addressing recidivism rates when incarcerated individuals are released back to the society.

Giving prisoners free college education will lead to a decrease in financial hardships and hence a reduction in the rates of recidivism. Incarcerated people who participate in college classes are 46 percent lower to engage in recidivism compared to those had taken no college classes (Castro, 2018). College education is vital in helping those released from prison to get a job and have reduced financial hardship. Additionally, they can use the skills gained to make a smooth transition to the outside. Undeniably, college education equip prisoners will skills that they will find handy after release from prison.

The amount of resources expedited to the assistance and correctional programs will decrease if prisoners are accorded free and quality college education. Notably, from the 2.3 million people incarcerated in the US, $52 billion is spend yearly in corrections and other related programs (Lagemann, 2014). However, with college education, such high rates of recidivism will decrease and hence a reduction in prison population. Ultimately, the prison costs will decrease from a reduced prison population. As a result, the provision of free prison education has massive long-term benefits for the society and the government.
