Read chapter 1 (attached) and write a 275 word essay. To be given full credit for the week your essay should be in an Annotated Question form, this includes three elements:
o A quote from the learning material;
o Your own insight;
o A follow-up question(s).• it should be at least 275 words.
A sample of your initial discussion board response as an annotated question is as follows:
Chapter one of the text talks about the integrative model of organizational behavior and the five different topics –Individual Outcomes, Individual Mechanisms, Individual Characteristics, Group Mechanisms, and Organizational Mechanisms. Under individual outcomes It highlights (1. A quote from the learning material;)“the two primary outcomes of interest to organizational behavior research (and employees and organizations): job performance and organizational commitment (Colquitt, LePine, & Wesson, 2019, p. 7)”. It goes on to give the employee example as wanting to do well and maintain employment, and the manager/organization example as wanting to maximize job performance and ensure long-term retention.
(2. Your own insights;) I believe organizational culture is the difference between employees and organizations who can achieve the two primary goals versus those falling short. I have worked for companies with both positive and negative organizational cultures and seen firsthand the impact of each. In companies where the organizational culture was employee focused with transparent messaging, honest timely communications and clearly defined goals, the culture was generally positive. However, in companies where the focus was exclusively on the customer, with ambiguous messaging, inconsistent communications and vague goals, the culture was often negative.
The textbook defines organizational culture as “the shared social knowledge within an organization regarding the rules, norms and values that shape the attitudes and behaviors of its employees (Colquitt, LePine, & Wesson, 2019, p. 560)”. Companies like Ikea and others listed on the Fortune 100 Best Places to Work list highlight organizational culture as a key driver in both employee performance and organizational commitment. (3. A follow-up question(s);)Do you believe organizational culture contributes to employee job performance and organizational commitment? Have you worked in an environment where the organizational culture impacted your job performance and organizational commitment? What are some past or current work experiences you attribute to the organizational culture you experienced either positive or negative?

Answer
Chapter one of the book comprehensively introduces one to organizational behavior (OB). The chapter accomplishes the task through defining organizational behavior, looking that the primary outcomes for studying organizational behavior, the factors that affect the primary outcomes of studying organizational behavior, the integration of organizational behavior in an organization, and the reason why firms that are good at organizational behavior are profitable in the market. "people often wonder whether a firm's ability to manage OB has any bearing on its bottom-line profitability (Colquitt, LePine, and Wesson 10)".
I believe a firm's ability to manage organizational behavior has a serious bearing on its profitability. The performance of an organization highly depends on the quality of its employees. The organization's employees must be able to deliver and create a conducive work environment where the company's production process can go smoothly. Therefore, managers need the ability to manage organizational behavior to ensure that the employees of the organization enjoy the work they are doing. Job satisfaction plays an integral role in increasing the rate of commitment employees have to the organization and the tasks assigned to them. Therefore, it is integral to have astute organizational behavior skills to ensure employees have high levels of job satisfaction and commitment.
Secondly, as Colquitt, LePine, and Wesson assert, the modern workforce is diverse (10). Through understanding, organizational behavior organizations get a clear picture of how to manage their diverse workforce effectively. Do you believe organizational behavior knowledge helps eliminate conflicts that are bound to happen in organizations with a diverse workforce? Can managers of such organizations leverage the use of organizational behavior to increase the performance of their employees?
