Answer

Striking at the Queen: Case Analysis

Specific Problem, Solution/ “Position Statement”

Going by  the Tech-3’s belief that Yvonne Fargo is to blame for most of the institution’s problems (most of which seem to have either started or worsened when she took over), it is safe to assert that poor or problematic leadership is at the cause of the said problems. Therefore, to address Tech’s problems, it would be imperative to start by addressing its leadership, which has so far demonstrated its determination to frustrate the Tech-3’s efforts to draw attention to what is going on at the institution. As such, a first step towards addressing the issue of leadership is to push for the removal of Yvonne Fargo as president.

Relevant Case Details

It appears Yvonne Fargo as president has had a hand to play in either causing or fueling the various problems the institution is facing/experiencing. For instance, in relation to the Athletic Complex construction problems, “Fargo knew there were problems while it was being constructed, but did nothing” (Conn & Guess, 2011: p. 9). She is also to blame for the institution’s poor hiring practices, fraudulent payroll payments, spinning negative publicity, and overall negligence and a ‘don’t-care’ attitude relating students’ physical security among other issues. Examining the manner in which the administration in general has treated the Tech-3, Fargo’s hand and influence can be seen in almost every instance, from the trustees to the internal auditor and Vice President just to mention but a few figures who have either shunned or persuaded the Tech-3 to drop their case. To say the least, the institution’s culture can be attributed to Fargo in her capacity as president. It would be imperative to push for her removal if anything is to change.

Action Plan

Removing Yvonne Fargo clearly appears to be an uphill task, more so given her influence within the institution and beyond. She has strong political connections and a strong financial muscle that will enable her to put up a spirited fight against any efforts to remove her. Despite this, there is hope especially if all (or a majority of) students can be mobilized and rallied behind Tech-3 and their fight for a better Coastal Technical University. Many have been made to believe the Tech-3 are enemies of the institutions but this is not the case, so fighting off this enemy tag and ensuring other students see things from such a shared perspective would be a first step. Staging peaceful protests within and outside campus would be fruitful as it would ensure even state and federal authorities give the issue the attention it deserves, hopefully without Fargo’s influence. While this carries the risk of paralyzing learning for some time, it will ultimately provide a lasting solution to the institution’s crisis, which is rooted in its leadership.
