Answer

Controversial Ethical Issues in the Health System

The healthcare sector is witnessing rapid growth across the globe. As a result of this, there need for competent healthcare professionals who understand health practice demands in regards to ethics has increased steadily. However, currently, numerous several ethical issues have emerged amongst healthcare practitioners including sexual relationships, patient confidentiality, negligence and malpractice, as well as, euthanasia among others. As such, this paper describes the most controversial ethical issue today and in fifty years’ time. Moreover, it also focuses on whether the ethical principles would help make proper decisions within the health system.

Currently, the most ethical issue within the heath sector is the misconduct and negligence among healthcare professionals. Sauer (1985) contended that medical mistakes are regarded some of the leading causes of death in hospitals across the US.  In healthcare setting, negligence can be caused by faulty medical apparatus, pressure due to huge numbers of patients requiring care or personal stress hindering the ability of physicians to make critical judgement. Essentially, delayed diagnosis or inaccuracy in offering diagnosis occurs as a result of this and this consequently causes more danger or increased mortalities. Essentially, healthcare providers are among the well trained professionals and thus no excuse can be tolerated from them when negligence occurs under their watch.

It is foreseen that in fifty years to come, patients’ privacy and secrecy would be a major ethical issue in the health care system. According to Cash (2005), healthcare practitioners are trained to ensure that healthcare information of patients remain private and confidential. Disclosing such information to the public or to unauthorized persons would be cause unrepairable damage to patients or their relatives. As such, protecting this information should thus be considered a priority for the healthcare professionals. Nonetheless, with the increasing cases of negligence among physicians, it is not anything to doubt that keeping these secrets would be impossibility in the future.

In conclusion, the behavioral trends and patterns among healthcare practitioners clearly depict that all the ethical principles and theories learned in this class may not be effectively applied to make ethical decisions now and in the future. The reasoning is based on the fact that as medical systems become more developed, our physicians become ignorant of their guiding ethical principles.
