Evidence Based Practice Flu vaccine improving employee participation in receiving vaccine

In collaboration with the approved course preceptor, students will identify a specific evidence-based topic for the capstone project change proposal. Students should consider the clinical environment in which they are currently employed or have recently worked. The capstone project topic can be a clinical practice problem, an organizational issue, a leadership or quality improvement initiative, or an unmet educational need specific to a patient population or community. The student may also choose to work with an interprofessional collaborative team.

Students should select a topic that aligns to their area of interest as well as the clinical practice setting in which practice hours are completed.

Write a 500-750 word description of your proposed capstone project topic. Include the following:

The problem or issue, intervention, quality initiative, educational need, or collaborative interprofessional team project that will be the focus of the change proposal.
The setting or context in which the problem or issue, intervention, quality initiative, educational need, or collaborative interprofessional team project can be observed.
A description (providing a high level of detail) regarding the problem or issue, intervention, quality initiative, educational need, or collaborative interprofessional team project.
Effect of the problem or issue, intervention, quality initiative, educational need, or collaborative interprofessional team project.
Significance of the topic and its implications for nursing practice.
A proposed solution to the identified project topic with an explanation of how it will affect nursing practice.
You are required to cite to a minimum of eight peer-reviewed sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years, appropriate for the assignment criteria, and relevant to nursing practice. Plan your time accordingly to complete this assignment.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Answer

  1.

    Improving Influenza Vaccination Rate

Flu has the potential to affect nearly half of the world’s population and cause significant morbidity and mortality during a severe pandemic outbreak. According to a joint report by the World Health Organization (WHO)and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 3 to 5 million cases of flu that occur every year, which result in about 300,000 to 500000 deaths (Fraser-Johnson, 2018)). Several studies reveal that Health Care Workers (HCWs) pose the greatest risk of contacting the diseases and infecting patients and other people in the community as a result their exposure in the workplace and the community. According to (), as of 2017, the influenza vaccination rate for American’s Health Care Workers (HCWs) was 63.5%, which is below national goal of 90% (Oguz, 2019). This statistic clearly shows that health care workers remain a threat to patients and community as far as spread of flu is concerned, especially in developing countries. Therefore, an evidenced solution is required to improve vaccination rate among healthcare workers to prevent the spread of the disease.

The setting and the population of the project is hospital or healthcare institution and healthcare workers. The organization choice will be a full service community hospital with long term care. The project will enroll a number of employees particularly the ones that had declined or oppose seasonal flu vaccination within the hospital or the healthcare institution.

The issue of low vaccination rate within the hospitals has got several effects to the society. Notably, a large outbreak of flu that is facilitated by healthcare workers as a result of lack of vaccination can cause significant financial burden,  decrease quality of patient care, and can cause significant safety concerns for stakeholders and organizations when the virus spread across Healh Care Workers and the community (Black et al., 2017). A study conducted by Durando et al. (2019), reveals that loss of productivity is a major effect among healthy working adults with rate of absenteeism being more than 30 percent. This is worsened when healthcare workers do not report to work aggravating the issue of nursing shortage in hospitals, which leads to poor care delivery. Unfortunately, the spread of the disease can cause several deaths to health workers as well as the communities.

Improving the rate of vaccination is an important step in hospitals and communities. The topic is important in educating healthcare professionals about the significance of regular vaccination (Mustafa etal., 2017). In the event that they stand at the centre of the disease spread because of their exposure, it is important for them to get vaccinated. This will reduce rising cases of seasonal flu pandemics that cause several deaths globally (Parmet, 2018). Additionally, the topic justifies the responsibilities of health workers as number one defenders of human lives in terms of prevention of emerging diseases. As stated by To et al. (2017), it sounds incongruous that individuals who are given responsibility to protect the lives of people are the ones who facilitate the spread of diseases by refusing to take preventive measures.

The evidence-based intervention for the issue is educating Health Care Workers about the need to have or participate in regular Flu vaccination. Notably, education trim down the barriers and misapprehensions that are associated the vaccine, give clarity about the action of the vaccine, decrease the social prompts linked with vaccine refusal, particularly when leaders’ role model and promote the vaccine (Stead et al., 2019).

Ways My Project Aligns with My Organization’s Mission and Vision

New projects developed in organizations should solve existing issues and align with the organizational mission, vision, and culture. My project of creating curriculum lessons on strategies to enhance compassion, address fatigue and burnout, and improve nurse retention aligns with Mission Regional Medical Center’s mission and vision of delivering compassionate and quality care to patients and the community.

By providing strategies that can promote and support self-efficacy and corporate stress management training, my project prepares nurses to have a better level of satisfaction, hence, provide compassionate and quality care as envisioned in my organization’s mission. When practitioners’ comfort is ensured through fatigue and burnout management, their productivity increases and the quality of services they offer improves, resulting in better patient outcomes. Mission Regional Medical Center seeks to ensure that it provides safe and high-quality health services to its patients and the community (Mission Regional Medical Center, n.d). My project endeavors to assist nurse practitioners become motivated to work towards the attainment of such a vision. As such, I see the project implementation helping the organization attain its core mission and vision. Burnout and fatigue are factors that affect the nurses’ satisfaction and the quality of their services. As such, the project undoubtedly addresses these issues, hence preparing nursing staff to assist the organization in attaining its mission and vision.

In sum, my project of implementing strategies to reduce fatigue and burnout and ultimately ensure nurse retention aligns with Mission Regional Medical Center’s mission and vision because it increases the practitioners’ satisfaction levels. With better motivation, the nurses will help the organization attain its mission and vision of ensuring the delivery of quality and better patient care.

4.QUESTION

Flu vaccines getting community to take it

In collaboration with the approved course preceptor, students will identify a specific evidence-based topic for the capstone project change proposal. Write a 150-250 word summary explaining which category your topic and intervention are under (community or leadership).

ANSWER

Flu Vaccination

Flu has the potential to affect nearly half of the world’s population and cause significant morbidity and mortality during a severe pandemic outbreak. According to a joint report of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 3 to 5 million cases of flu that occur every year, which result in about 300,000 to 500000 deaths, where the majority of the deaths occur in adults above the age of 65 years old. Several studies reveal that one of the most effective preventive measure of illnesses and death caused by Flu is vaccination. However, it is noted that not everyone as well as communities get the vaccination. As of 2011, the influenza vaccination rate for American was 63.5%, which is below national goal of 90%. With such statistic in the United Stated, it can be noted that flu vaccination does not reach some of developing countries, hence the cause of high death cases that the world is experiencing. In order to promote vaccination to all areas and communities, nursing leadership is most important in education not only other nurses, but also the community on the importance of vaccination. As such, the topic and the intervention are under the leadership realm of nursing.
