Examining the Case of Nurse Educator Roles
Leadership is considered as a predictable attribute whereby all the registered nurses and leaders within the profession are required to be role-dependent (Lamb et al., 2018). Despite the fact that the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) roles have remained in place for years, the decision makers within the healthcare context have a limited knowledge of the value-added elements associated with the roles. Identifying the nurse educator and nurse leader roles as advanced practice nurses is associated with the benefit of role clarification. Notably, this step will make it clear for the nurse educators that they have to play their role of strengthening the healthcare workforce since the APNs are not always recognized as formal leaders. However, the nurse educators are directly impacted with the responsibility of acting as role models and offering their guidance on leadership matter for a better patient and organization outcome (Lamb et al., 2018).
When the nurse leader roles are identified as that of the APNs, the professionals feel the need to offer the practicing nurses with the right guidance, skills and knowledge to effectively do their jobs with the field of care (Lamb et al., 2018). The only disadvantage associated with the process is that the APNs may not serve as the best educators or leaders because their duties are mostly service focused, rather than leadership or education based, which may affect the quality of their work while in practice (Lamb et al., 2018).
I disagree that the roles of the nurse educator and that of the nurse leader can meet that of the APNs. This is founded on the knowledge that the nurse educator has a responsibility of implementing care standards and research within a clinical setting, the leaders are focused on foreseeing leadership and quality matters, while the APNs are mainly focused of patient care planning and delivery (Lamb et al., 2018).
