Answer

Many Latino youths are faced with factors such as harassment by peers that make them prone to mental illnesses. They are exposed to stressful situations that manifest as anxiety and depression and can turn out to be suicidal (Newhill, 2015). Similarly, compared to other ethnic groups, Latino adults report higher psychotic symptoms such as hearing their name when there is no one (Naso, 2016). Latinos share similar religious and spiritual beliefs such as speaking with their dead loved ones that can be easily confused with psychotic symptoms. These beliefs make the group appear prone to dissociative experiences that may be related or unrelated to trauma (Newhill, 2015).

The general Latino population presents a lower mental health disorder rates. However, although they have much lower economic power, Mexican immigrants incur lower substance use and depression rates than those born in the US. The Puerto Ricans, on the other hand, present the highest mental illness cases among the Latino community.

According to Naso (2016), Latinos come after Asian Americans when it comes to low mental health service utilization. They withhold from expressing their challenges in public for fear of losing their privacy. Similarly, they are faced with a language barrier when trying to access treatment because most health practitioners cannot express themselves adequately in Spanish. Latinos, especially the illegal immigrants avoid seeking medical attention for mental illnesses for fear of being deported (Newhill, 2015). Similarly, they cannot afford these services just like they cannot access health insurance. There is over-reliance on home remedies and natural medicine for all illnesses including mental health by the group influenced by their traditional practices. Finally, Latinos are faced with stigma issues which hinder some from accessing mental health treatment for fear that they will be deemed crazy (Naso, 2016)).
