Explanation of Qualitative Methods
The qualitative study by Beck and Watson (2010) aimed at explaining what women experiences meant regarding their encounter of subsequent childbirth following a traumatic one previously.
The study used a phenomenological method which is a suitable approach to evaluate experiences. The sample size involved 35 women with a mean age of 33 years. Data was collected through the internet where the participants shared their experiences through email. Notably, all participants were Caucasians. The data analysis involved Colaizzi’s approach which follows various steps. Essentially, grounded theory study would also be applied for this research to convert the established experiences into theory or framework. This would inform future studies as established from the themes. Ethnography, on the other hand, can be explained by the study focusing on Caucasians only. The approach is described by shared cultures and practices for individuals in different parts of the world.
Main strengths of the study were on the methodology and sample characteristics. The phenomenology approach is critical in explaining human experiences without theories. In this study, the central objective was describing the women experiences thus the approach was suitable. The sample was international as demonstrated in the participants’ locations including US, Australia, and Canada. In addition, diverse characteristics regarding the sample size were obtained including education, marital status, and delivery approach. The main weakness of the study was the use of Caucasian individuals although this explains the ethnography approach. Another weakness was the small size of the study population thus questioning the reliability of the findings.
Key findings included women eluding pregnancy in healing, panicking during the second pregnancy, and developing strategies to complete the motherhood journey. The implications of this study to my program, present, and future practice are centred on understanding trauma among women who have had unpleasant previous experience. It is therefore imperative to understand these women and provide encouragement among other psychological interventions to remove the invisible pain and foster for another pregnancy.
