Exploring Issues and Topics that Matter
Issues and topics that matter are concerns that the public is interested in. For instance, climate change is a topic that matters and its consequences arouse issues that matter. This paper seeks to evaluate methods of exploring issues and topics that matter.
Exploring issues that matter requires one to establish whether the issue is enduring and persistent such as whether a resource should be owned communally or under different regulations. The other aspect of issues that matter is whether they affect public concern in terms of decision making or civic judgment (Lowe & Jones, 2015). The other aspect that should be evaluated on issues that matter is whether scholars across disciplines agree on its importance. Issues that matter tend to capture the attention of scholars from different backgrounds making them worthy subjects of research. Exploring issues that matter should also include an understanding of how they influence the development of students
When teaching issues that matter, daily lessons should be connected to the central concern. Although structuring the study around an issue that matters increases the chances that the lessons will increase in number, their purpose extends more than the internal coherence of the students to create an advanced understanding and ability to respond to the central issue. To advance the opposing aspects of an issue that matters, competing perspectives and arguments should be identified. The arguments are used as foundations for daily lessons to enable students to formulate individual positions on the purpose and nature of the issue, the lessons should also be linked to key terms, persons, events, and concepts that students can use to address the issue that matters effectively (Flood et al., 2015).
In conclusion, exploring issues and topics that matter requires a critique perspective. This will enable the teacher to develop the concept gradually using familiar aspects and components related to the topic or issue.
