Factor that makes Police Work Stressful Compared to other Occupations
Occupation is generally viewed as a source of better life when one has successfully completed a training module. However, there are implications faced by people employed in different sector of employment. In this brief, a discussion on occupational stress among police officers will be analyzed to identify factors causing stress and categorize stress factors facing this group.
Factors Causing of stress among police Officers
Police as an occupation is associated with a number of stress factors. The first stress factor is uncertainty from impending danger arising from their occupation. According to Queirós, et al. (2020), police officers are uncertain of the outcome of the complex job situations such as terrorist attacks and arresting dangerously armed criminals. The second stress factor is increased violence and user of crude weapons among the civilians. Studies indicates that one out of five civilians is armed and commits attack to fellow civilian daily. The third stress factor is critics arising from society on the failed roles of police. American society has issues with how police conduct their services in investigation criminal activities. An illustration of this is the Black Lives Matter movement that is criticizing police service delivery. When the above three factors are faced by police officers, the outcome is normally stressful situation that is less faced in other types of occupation.
Category of Stress Factors among Police Officers
Occupational stress faced by police officers can be grouped into behavioral, psychological and physical. The first illustration provides duty outcome uncertainty can lead to absenteeism that is associated with personal behavior change (Tran et al., 2020). The second stress factor on violence and possession of crude weapons causes officer to use force in bringing order which is classified as physical stress. The third category is criticism that may lead an officer to depression and therefore this is psychological stress.
